Trees have both common and scientific names, such as Eastern White Pine (Pinus strobus). On June 6, Trees for Suffield will give a third name, a personal name, to two “notable” trees located in Sunrise Park: the Smith Sassafras (Sassafras albidum) and the Loomis White Fir (Abies concolor). Naming a tree with a personal name makes it stand out, gives people a closer connection to nature and in this case, celebrates the life of two men who made lasting impacts on Suffield. (Lester Smith and Roger Loomis).

Join us for a Double Tree Naming Ceremony at Sunrise Park at 1:30 on Saturday, June 6 from 1 to 3 pm. (Rain Date Sunday June 7th.)

Welcome to the Suffield Land Conservancy 🌲

Since 1981, we’ve worked to protect over 700 acres of forests, fields, and ridgelines across town. These lands are shaped by long-term care, maintained for wildlife, public access, and the community.

This Earth Day, we’re reminded that stewardship can be as simple as showing up, walking the properties, respecting the land, and helping keep these spaces clean for those who come after us.

If you’ve spent time on these trails, you’re already connected to this work: https://www.suffieldlandconservancy.org/

Want to explore the outdoors this weekend? Stop by our Annual Wildflower Walk at Sunrise Park for a stroll around White's Pond. We hope to see you there!

Rapture and Melancholy, 5/3/24
Suffield’s Beauty

The creation shouts it praise in the beautiful flowering trees of Suffield, Connecticut, and its surrounding areas: Pink and white flowering Dogwoods, Crepe Myrtles, Flowering Cherry, Redbuds, Star Magnolia, and Flowering Quince and Pear trees.

This gift of trees and shrubs open us to the deeper mystery of living.

Calmness follows as does an interior silence. We can claim this centeredness, because extra ordinary things connect us to the pace of creation. We learn all things breathe the same way.

Sometimes our intellect buffers us from beauty, but our eyes do not. They can see the wonderful miracle that is now passing before us.
Soon, because of impermanence, the beauty will be gone and life will happen in between the next thing of beauty that comes our way.

We had a tree-mendous time celebrating Arbor Day at McAlister Intermediate School! The Helena Bailey Spencer Tree Board planted three new Sugar Maple trees, and 3rd, 4th, and 5th grader class representatives got to help mulch. We can’t wait to see these maples grow and provide shade for years to come. Big thanks to the students for their hard work! 🌳 🌳🌳
