Today Joyce Zien and Jean Egan presented George Fields, owner of Suffield Hardware, with a certificate of appreciation and gift certificate. George has supported the Garden Club for many years and sold hundreds of tickets for us for the holiday home tour, helping to ensure its success. George became a part owner of the store in 1997 and bought the business from his parents in 2014 when they retired. He is hands-on, knowledgeable and friend to everyone in Suffield. Thank you, George!

At our Monday meeting we enjoyed a presentation by Laurie Masciandaro on the history and designs of Connecticut’s Historic Gardens. Our own Phelps Hatheway Garden in Suffield is one of 16 official gardens, which was the result of our member Lynn Mervosh’s efforts in 2018. When she discovered original designs in the archives Lynn and Joyce led the team of volunteeer member gardeners to restore the garden’s heritage to become one of the historic gardens. Lynn oversees three historic homes and two gardens for Connecticut Landmarks, and we greatly appreciate her passion for this work!

Garden Club members and guests came together for camaraderie, conversation and lunch at our March meeting. Can you spot the imposters in the beautiful, clever Spring flower arrangements made by Dave Witkins?

Jean, Marie, Griffin and Kathleen took in the CT Flower and Garden show on opening day. The theme was A Storybook Garden, and our own Vana Nespor, as always, took on one of the challenges …interpreting Jack and the Beanstalk and winning a second place ribbon. Congratulations Vana! Our favorite blue ribbon winners were a petite arrangement for The Princess and the Pea, and the incredible Hermes Winged Sandal. The show continues at the Hartford Convention Center through Sunday and along with the exhibits features many of wonderful vendors with great plants, cut flowers, air plants and many other interesting products.
