Mosquito spray doesn’t just kill mosquitoes.
It also harms butterflies, moths, fireflies, bees, caterpillars, and countless other beneficial insects that pollinate our plants, feed birds, and keep ecosystems healthy.

The good news? There are better ways to reduce mosquitoes. Eliminate standing water, use mosquito buckets, and protect the insects that make life possible.

Please follow our friends at Trees for Suffield Initiative. While we are planting and maintaining some of the flowers and garden beds around Town, they are planting and supporting our trees.

Garden Therapy at Suffield House continues to bring the joy of flowers to the residents. Thank you Sally, Scott, Judy, Betty, Erin, Kimmy and Maddy. Now is the time to find a wide variety of blooms…all grown locally by Julie the Garden Fairy at Willow View Farm. You can pick your own well into fall!

Is your garden abuzz with pollinators? Today the bees are sharing “ Pardon my Lavender” bee balm (Monarda didyma) with a Hemaris thysbe, or Hummingbird clearwing. It’s actually a moth of the family Sphingidae that mimics hummingbirds. It’s doing a pretty good job of it!

Our most peripatetic members, Myron Marshaus and Dave Witkins, took these photos at the recent Pearls of Newport Flower Show at Rosecliff Mansion. Beautiful arrangements, table scapes and botanical arts were created by Federated Garden Clubs of Rhode Island. Unfortunately it was so busy they didn’t get any shots of themselves sipping champagne in white linen suits!

Our most devoted “Field Trippers”, Joyce, Marie, Sue and Connie, ventured off to the Stonington Garden Club’s Gardens by the Sea tour yesterday. It continues today from 10 am to 4 pm if you’re up for the trip to charming Stonington Borough.

On this lovely day Myron Marshaus and Dave Witkins enjoyed a tour of the rose garden at Elizabeth Park. There are several more free tours and lectures this month, culminating in Rose Weekend, June 20-21. Last week at our annual meeting and luncheon we thanked Joyce Zien for serving another term as President, and she passed the torch ( gavel actually) to our new President, Lisa Parker. Many thanks to Tavern 1927 and Jean Matejek for creating a lovely event.
