We wanted to share what just one week in rescue can look like.
We recently came across a home in Stockton with several unaltered dogs, and the situation had grown beyond what one person could manage. It’s frustrating because situations like this can grow so quickly when dogs aren’t spayed or neutered, and by the time help is needed, rescues are left trying to find space for so many dogs at once. We’re not sharing this to shame anyone, but it’s another reminder of just how important spaying and neutering really is.
We took in 2 mama dogs and their 9 babies. Both moms were underweight, covered in fleas, itchy, and full of worms. You could tell this wasn’t their first litter. They were scared when they first came to us, but after just a few days of feeling safe, their personalities started coming out. They are the sweetest, most loving girls, full of personality, and they just want to soak up all the love and attention they can get. ❤️
We also took in a 6-month-old puppy who had been attacked by another dog in the home. He had wounds all over his body and was extremely swollen and painful. Thankfully, X-rays showed no fractures. He’s currently on three medications and is doing well. ❤️🩹
There was also a 17-year-old senior dog who could no longer walk. His owner didn’t have the funds to help him peacefully pass, so one of our fosters connected her with her veterinarian and helped arrange for him to be laid to rest. Sometimes helping doesn’t mean taking an animal into rescue. Sometimes it’s simply helping someone give their pet a peaceful and dignified goodbye. 🌈
There are still 4 dogs at the home, 2 females and 2 males, that need help. We would love to get them into rescue, but we simply cannot take on four more dogs without fosters or another rescue stepping in. Rescues everywhere are stretched thin right now.
At the very least, we want to help get these remaining dogs spayed and neutered so the cycle stops here.
Pit Bulls already have a harder time finding homes, and finding fosters for larger breeds can be extremely difficult. When dogs continue having litter after litter, there simply aren’t enough rescues, foster homes or adopters to keep up.
A few unaltered dogs can quickly turn into many more dogs and puppies needing homes.
And after taking in these 12 dogs, we also took in 3 female terrier puppies who were dumped in Lodi in a box.
All of this happened within ONE WEEK.
Right now, we have around 70 dogs in foster care, and that doesn’t even include our cats.
We share this because this is the reality of rescue. Our fosters are full, vet bills add up quickly, and food and supplies disappear just as fast. We can’t save every animal, but we do what we can with the resources and foster homes we have. ❤️
