Update (10/10): A little bit of good news for our sweet girl! Jo ate her dinner overnight! 🩵
Unfortunately, her blood glucose and temperature were low again this morning. She was given a dextrose bolus and syringe-fed, and thankfully, she’s perked back up and is showing more energy!
She’s still has a long way to go, but we’re celebrating every little victory! Please keep sending all the love and prayers her way 🫶🏼

This $5 Friday, we're asking you to take a moment out of your day to read about a little girl named Jo. Because right now, she needs all the help she can get.
Jo is a tiny, 6wo Beagle/Dachshund mix who came to us from a local municipal shelter after staff noticed how rapidly she was declining. She's extremely pale, barely has the energy to move, and her blood glucose is dangerously low. Thankfully, her temperature is stable, but we're now taking her for an emergency blood transfusion.
Six weeks old. And already fighting for her life.
We wish we could tell you that cases like Jo's are rare. That emergencies like this only happen every once in a while. But the truth is, this is becoming an almost daily reality for those of us in animal rescue.
Animal welfare is in a heartbreaking place right now.
Municipal shelters are overwhelmed. Rescues are stretched beyond their limits. Foster homes are full. Veterinary bills are mounting. And every single day, more animals are being born into a world that doesn't have enough homes or resources waiting for them.
We're watching people who have dedicated their lives to saving animals struggle to keep going. And we're watching innocent animals pay the price for a crisis they had no part in creating.
And the animals have absolutely no idea. Jo doesn't know that donations are down. She doesn't know what an overcrowded shelter is, or how much a blood transfusion costs. She doesn't know that the people trying to save her are already overwhelmed with animals who need help.
She just knows she doesn't feel good. And all we want is to give her the chance to feel better. But we cannot keep doing this without you.
Every emergency we take on comes with a financial responsibility, and lately, the need has been far greater than the support coming in. We are constantly trying to figure out how to stretch what little we have to help one more animal.
And while we're doing everything we can to save the animals already here, we desperately need people to understand the importance of spaying and neutering.
This crisis doesn't begin when an animal enters a shelter. It begins long before that, with litter after litter being born while thousands of animals are already waiting for someone to choose them. We cannot rescue our way out of overpopulation. We need prevention. We need responsible pet ownership. And we need our communities to care about what happens to these animals before they end up in a shelter or homeless on the streets.
Today, though, our focus is Jo.

We don't know what the next few hours will bring. We don't know if this transfusion will be enough. And as much as we wish we could promise a happy ending, we can't.
But we do know that Jo deserves every chance we can give her.
She deserves to feel the grass beneath her paws. To chase toys, make a mess, and fall asleep in someone's arms. To grow into those little ears and find a family who will love her for the rest of her life. She deserves all the ordinary little things that so many dogs get to experience without a second thought.
We know we ask for help often. We know there are a thousand other things you could spend $5 on today. But to Jo, and to every animal whose life depends on someone stepping up, that $5 means more than you may ever realize.
