Oops I forgot to tell ya’ll! The RRJA Board Meeting was yesterday October 22nd…

For my public comment I chose to inform the body of our new incarcerated hotline project.

Oooooh boy lemme tell you, did the energy in the room get nervous when I said “these hotline calls will be recorded”

Our initial team met last Tuesday. Here are the notes we put together about what we’re building:

Uncaged Hotline - What is it?
A public safety resource that provides over the phone advocacy and emotional support for people jailed in Rappahannock Regional Jail

- What we will do on the call
- Be a supportive ear and someone to talk to who will listen
- Gather information and triage incidents of abuse, mistreatment, or neglect
- No discussion of open court cases or legal advice

- How we help after the call
- Hound their Public Defender / Lawyer
- Help fill out Jail Paperwork
- Reach out to their family or peoples
- Write advocacy letters
- File FOIA requests

Uncaged Hotline Tasks and Alignments

These are the big tasks that we determined gotta get done to make this hotline happen. The current people who have so far volunteered to take on those tasks are (Named) in parentheses.

- Bank and Financial setup (Jullian)
- Finish Federal Filings (Jullian)
- Fundraising (Kristen)
- Awareness and Number Distribution (Shonda, Kristen)
- Gathering people to be on the Hotline (Shonda, Kristen)
- Hotline training (Kristen, Will)
- Hotline Number Technical Infrastructure (Will)
- Conduct some audience research (Will)

You four are running for this County’s role of Sheriff. The death of this person and the injury of the deputy was either an unavoidable tragedy or a solvable problem. More than prayers, we need concrete action that works towards a solution.

What treatment do incarcerated mother's and their unborn infants in our society deserve?

The medical neglect doesn't just affect the elderly and the infirm, mothers also suffer when they are forced by "Justice" to be caged during their pregnancy.

Brandi Abbott shared her experience with us over the phone. We used an Ai tool called to make this video from her testimony. The video is generated but the audio is authentic.

After much dragging of feet and drudging through the trenches we've brought together a moment where we all came to speak truth to power. Now we're releasing the whole enchilada.

If you want to see change at RRJ, then watch her testimony and take one little step forward.

Carrot and stick folks. Carrot and stick.

A couple of weeks ago, the FailSafe-ERA team had the opportunity to meet with Virginia Department of Corrections (VADOC) leaders to discuss reentry, the growing number of individuals returning to our region, and opportunities for greater collaboration.

This week, the conversation continued closer to home. We welcomed members of the Rappahannock Regional Jail (RRJ) leadership team to FailSafe-ERA for a meaningful conversation about strengthening our partnership and expanding our reach within the jail.

Through our growing partnership with RRJ, we are looking forward to reaching more men and women with programming that promotes cognitive and behavioral change, personal accountability, restorative thinking, family connection, and preparation for a successful return to the community.

And we know all too well that incarceration impacts more than the individual, it impacts the entire family. Family members often have many questions, concerns, and uncertainties as they navigate the incarceration of someone they love. That is why we are especially excited that our expanded partnership now includes a Family Liaison serving as a crucial bridge of communication.

From our recent conversation with VADOC leadership to this week’s meeting with RRJ leadership, we are encouraged by the willingness to work together. No single organization or agency can do this work alone and partnerships like these move us forward.

I know having heard stories like theirs over and over just how harrowing it can be to discover that what we are told about justice lacks any coherence to reality.
