Hope Creates

Hope Creates We empower youth and adults in recovery from Substance Use Disorder through creative community. Getting sober is difficult. Staying sober is equally challenging.

Our Mission: We empower youth and adults in recovery from, or at risk of, Substance Use Disorder to stay sober by engaging in the expressive arts and a vibrant and creative sober community. We focus on helping you stay sober by providing a vibrant and sober creative community that comes together to have screaming fun as we create and exhibit our work! By doing so, we transform the societal dialogu

e on addiction. If you are in recovery, we invite you and your family to join us. Our Vision: A community that understands Substance Use Disorder, nurtures recovery, supports prevention, and encourages constructive self-expression of sobriety. Please donate and help our young artists and entrepreneurs grow:

The beauty of fixing broken things... At our May Community Creation Event, we explored kintsugi (the art of repairing broken pottery with gold) and reflected on the power of resiliency.

Shuqing Ma has been a cornerstone of our Make Your M.A.R.C.® program for over three years. On day one, Shu asks, “What kind of music do you listen to?” By connecting the musicians our students already love to their inspirations, she encourages them to create something beautiful of their own.
Shu’s love for music reminds our entire team of its transcendent power to connect us with ourselves and others. We are so grateful for the grounded care and creativity Shu has brought to Hope Creates and Make Your M.A.R.C.® since cohort #2!

Last night, our Young Professionals Council hosted "Plant Your Spark," a Creative Networking Event for early career professionals passionate about the behavioral health field and "empowering recovery through the expressive arts" (the "why" behind everything we do at Hope Creates).

We sipped on "dirty sodas," decorated planters, and heard from YPC members Alexa Plant and Eleanor Byrd on the value of building diverse professional networks. A few key takeaways:

• The power of weak ties: Acquaintances and distant connections often open doors to opportunities our close circles can’t.
• Skill cross-pollination: Engaging across industries broadens how we think, communicate, and problem-solve.
• Bias reduction: Exposure to different perspectives challenges assumptions and strengthens inclusive leadership.

It’s hard to put into words what Kathie Thomas has built.

As our founder and inaugural Executive Director, her vision set everything in motion—and even in retirement, she continues to guide us from afar.

As we take on new milestones, including our first 48-hour matching campaign, we do so standing on the foundation she created.

Grateful for her leadership. Honored to carry it forward. 💚

For the next 48 hours, your donation (no matter the size) will count FOUR TIMES, thanks to matching donors. Click here to donate: https://secure.qgiv.com/event/shareart2026/

Since joining the Hope Creates board last year, Donalee Gastreich has made an immediate impact—bringing clarity, focus, and a steady presence as Board Secretary.

As Founder & CEO of Complete Solutions, she helps leaders evolve—blending mindset, creativity, and connection to build more human-centered organizations.

Her belief: when people are supported with both structure and creative expression, transformation is possible.

Grateful for her leadership—and her commitment to recovery.

Thank you for your service, Donalee. 👏👏👏

It truly takes a village—and at Hope Creates, our village is a powerful mix of behavioral health experts, technology leaders, CPAs, marketers, and more who believe in what’s possible through recovery and the arts.

We’re excited to spotlight Michael Martin, an Emmy Award-winning videographer and editor who made the leap from broadcast news to entrepreneurship, founding Mike Martin Media in 2009.

Mike brings more than talent behind the lens—he brings heart. His passion for both the arts and the recovery community in St. Louis is evident in the way he shows up for Hope Creates.

That passion has turned into action, with a deep commitment to helping us grow and tell the stories that matter most.

Grateful to have Mike in our corner. 👏 👏 👏

Grateful doesn’t quite cover it.

A heartfelt thank you to NAMI St. Louis for their support during our recent matching fundraising drive. Partnerships like this are what make a stronger, more compassionate community possible.

At Hope Creates, we see every day how closely mental health and recovery are connected. Behind every statistic is a person, a family, a story:
> 1 in 5 people live with a mental health condition. That means this work touches all of us.
> NAMI St. Louis shows up where it matters most—providing free education, advocacy, and support to individuals and families across the region. Their impact creates space for healing, understanding, and hope.

We’re proud to stand alongside them in building a St. Louis where people feel seen, supported, and not alone.
