In the past two years, youth mental health needs have reached an all-time high, and the consequences play out in schools and beyond. This doesn't have to be the case; despite limited school resources, we can do more to address the growing social-emotional needs of students. One way we can do this is through positive student-teacher relationships to build students' sense of school connectedness. Students in positive student-teacher relationships are nearly half as likely to consider attempting su***de, half as likely to attempt su***de, and one-third less likely to experience consistent feelings of hopelessness.

K-12 disciplinary disparities across race/ethnicity present many long-term consequences that play out in schools and beyond - including higher drop-out rates and increased likelihood of being arrested - and Black youth experience repeat suspensions at a higher rate than their White counterparts.

WTF?! - Take a look at Missouri's new election law, MO House Bill 1878. This law went into effect on 08/28/22 and is depriving many of their right to vote via photo ID voter legislation that disproportionately impacts voters of color. Nationally, more than 21 million Americans lack a form of government-issued identification, with 25% of Black citizens (18+) lacking a government ID compared to just 8% of White voting-aged citizens.

- MO House Bill 1878 went into effect on 08/28/22, depriving many of their right to vote via photo ID voter legislation that disproportionately impacts voters of color. Nationally, more than 21 million Americans lack a form of government-issued identification, and minority voters represent many of those folk without IDs. As a result, the participation gap between white voters and voters of color will worsen.

To cast ballots in MO, voters are now required to show a non-expired driver's license, state ID, passport, or photo military ID. If you or someone you know lacks an approved form of identification, local and national resources are available. Spread the word! 🤝 📢 🗣

A recent report by the Institute of Education Sciences found that youth mental health has declined in the recent years, with 75% of U.S. public schools reporting an increase in student mental health needs.
