At Willow Oak, we want kids to have the space to try, create, make a mess, find what they love and see where it takes them. Sometimes an art class is just a really fun afternoon and then sometimes, it’s the beginning of something they’ll carry with them for the rest of their lives.

Hey there! Lisa here. I officially stepped into the role of Board President at Willow Oak Arts on July 1, at a really important moment for an organization that has been serving Robertson County for 20 years.

We’ve also welcomed six new board members, which means roughly half of our board is brand new. And we were very intentional about who we invited to the table. Our board now includes CFOs who have worked for massive organizations, marketing leaders from global brands, local entrepreneurs, economic development professionals and more. We chose people we believe can help us answer one big question: How do we build a Willow Oak that can sustain another 20 years?

We’re incredibly grateful for the past board members, staff, artists, donors and volunteers who built the foundation we inherited because the bones are incredible good. Now its about evolving what already exists and making sure it is strong enough to serve another generation.

We’re already seeing a LOT seeing progress and now it's our job to begin to publicize it more, so here goes!

Our Founding 60, launched just a few months ago, has generated more than $1,300 in recurring monthly support, and we now have artist spaces available for rent inside Willow Oak, creating affordable space for local artists while generating additional revenue to help sustain our building.

One of the things I’m most excited about is expanding what arts education can mean here. Our beloved classes, camps, choirs and programs will always be foundational to Willow Oak, but we’re now beginning to offer career certifications in the visual arts, too.

A child should be able to take their first class at Willow Oak, discover something they love, develop that talent, and eventually find training, credentials, mentors and pathways into a real creative career.

Willow Oak isn't starting over. We have 20 years of art created, children inspired, adults given a chance to reconnect with and learn new talents, gorgeous performances given and a community built to build upon. And we're just getting started. Thank you for your continued support.

We’re building something new at Willow Oak for students who want to take their love of art a little further! Our new Visual Arts Certificate Program is a long-term creative pathway designed to give students a strong foundation in visual art, opportunities to explore different mediums, one-on-one mentorship, and eventually a customized curriculum and portfolio built around where they want their art to take them.

And it all starts with our first program, Elements of Art.

This 14-week foundational course explores line, shape, value, texture, color, space and form through hands-on projects. For students pursuing the full certificate, this is their first step before moving into Principles of Art in January and eventually exploring drawing, painting, ceramics, sculpture, photography, fiber arts, art history and more.

Not interested in the full certificate? You can still take the class! Elements of Art is open to grades 6–12 AND adults who simply want to learn, create and strengthen their skills.

Thursdays, September 3–December 17, 4:30–6:30 PM
Grades 6–12 + Adults
$448, supplies included, payment plans available

So, what exactly is Elements of Art and how does it fit into Willow Oak’s new Visual Arts Certificate Program? We're so glad you asked!

Willow Oak’s Visual Arts Certificate Program is a larger, long-term creative career pathway for students who want to go deeper in their art education. Students in the certificate program will move through foundational courses, explore different areas of visual art, work with a mentor, and ultimately develop a portfolio and a customized curriculum around their interests and goals.

Elements of Art is the very first foundational course in that pathway.

Over 14 weeks, students will learn the building blocks artists use in virtually every kind of visual art: line, shape, value, texture, color, space and form. They won’t just learn what those words mean, they’ll actually create projects that help them understand how each element works and how artists use them together.

Students pursuing the full Visual Arts Certificate will begin here, then move into Principles of Art in January 2027 that will run through May 2027, followed by opportunities to study areas like painting, drawing, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, photography, fiber arts, art history and more.

But here's an important part: You do NOT have to enroll in the full certificate program to take Elements of Art. The class is open to students in grades 6-12 AND adults who simply want to strengthen their art skills and learn alongside other artists.

Class time: Thursdays, September 3–December 17 from 4:30–6:30 PM
Great for: Grades 6–12 + Adults
Cost: $448, includes supplies (payment plans available)

We have some BIG news to celebrate at Willow Oak!

We are incredibly grateful to receive a $15,000 Community Impact Grant from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee! And what makes this support especially meaningful is that it is unrestricted, which means we have the flexibility to put these resources exactly where they can make the biggest difference for Willow Oak and the people we serve.

That matters so much for a community arts organization like ours. It means we can respond when a program is growing, support the behind-the-scenes needs that keep our doors open, invest in opportunities for our students and artists, and continue dreaming up new ways to make the arts accessible right here in our community.

We believe deeply that the arts belong in thriving communities. They give kids a place to discover what they’re capable of and adults permission to keep creating.

We are so thankful to the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee for recognizing the importance of that work and investing in organizations like Willow Oak that are doing it every single day. This is a win for Willow Oak, but even more importantly, it’s a win for the community we get to serve. 🎨
