Have you ever wanted to use your creativity to make a lasting impact?

Empower: abilities is looking for local artists to help launch Beyond the Canvas: A Collaborative Art Experienceโ€”a new community initiative that pairs artists with individuals with disabilities to create one-of-a-kind works of art.

This isn't about teaching an art class. It's about sharing your passion, building a meaningful connection, and creating something extraordinary together.

As a Featured Artist, you'll:
โ€ข Partner one-on-one with a participant.
โ€ข Share your artistic style and creativity.
โ€ข Build a meaningful relationship through art.
โ€ข Showcase your collaborative artwork during a special community exhibition and fundraising auction on Tuesday, November 10.
โ€ข Receive an optional $200 materials stipend to help offset project expenses.

Whether you paint, sculpt, work with wood, textiles, photography, pottery, mixed mediaโ€”or another creative mediumโ€”we'd love to hear from you!
Interested? Email [email protected] to request an Artist Application and learn more.

โค๏ธ Know someone who would love this opportunity? Tag them in the comments or share this postโ€”we'd love to connect with artists who are ready to make a difference through creativity.

Spots are limited, and we're excited to build a diverse group of artists for this inaugural event.

The masterpiece isn't just the artworkโ€”it's the journey you create along the way.
This art experience has been made possible through funding from Springfield Regional Arts Council, Community Foundation of The Ozarks, and the Jeannette L. Musgrave Foundation.

DONโ€™T BE SCAMMED: Beware of Bereavement Scams

Grieving families can become targets for criminals who search recent obituaries and death notices for names and personal details. Scammers may then pose as funeral home representatives, government officials, creditors or even family membersโ€”often demanding immediate payment or personal information.

Protect yourself and your loved ones:

๐Ÿ”น Be suspicious of unexpected calls, texts or emails related to a recent death.
๐Ÿ”น Never provide banking information, passwords or Social Security numbers to an unknown caller.
๐Ÿ”น Donโ€™t send money through gift cards, wire transfers, cryptocurrency or payment apps under pressure.
๐Ÿ”น If you receive a call asking for a payment, hang up and then contact the funeral home, business or family member directly using a trusted phone number (to verify the called was really representing the funeral home).
๐Ÿ”น Remember: urgency, threats and demands for secrecy are major warning signs.

Grief is difficult enough. Take your time, verify every request and donโ€™t let anyone pressure you into acting immediately.

When in doubt: Stop. Check. Protect.

We love seeing other local organizations creating opportunities to share the voices, stories, and experiences of people with disabilities in our community. ๐Ÿ’š

If you havenโ€™t had a chance to see The Life I Choose, presented by Abilities First, thereโ€™s still time! Some of our staff have had the opportunity to see the exhibit, and it is absolutely worth a visit. The portraits and personal stories are powerful and such a meaningful reminder of the importance of choice, independence, and being seen and heard.

The exhibit is nearing the end of its time at C-ART Gallery on C-Street, so stop by during the September 4 First Friday Art Walk. The gallery will be open until 8 p.m., and the exhibit is free to the public.

Weโ€™re proud to support the work of fellow organizations like Abilities First that help amplify the voices of people with disabilities in our community.

Go see it before it moves on to its next location! ๐Ÿ’š

๐Ÿพ Dog-gone itโ€”we missed National Dog Day!

But around here, we think Payton deserves to be celebrated every day! As a dedicated service dog, trusted teammate and one of the most popular members of the empower: abilities staff, Payton works hard helping Afton navigate each day with greater independence.

Payton's now expecting belly rubs and treats as belated recognition. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿ’™

๐ŸŽ Back to School Means Back to Accessibility! โ™ฟ๐Ÿ“š

Welcome back, students, teachers, school staff, and families! As a new school year begins, empower: abilities wants to challenge all of us to think about one more thing as we prepare for a great year: ACCESSIBILITY.

For students with disabilities, returning to school can sometimes mean extra work behind the scenesโ€”making sure materials are accessible, navigating transportation, figuring out physical access, requesting accommodations, or explaining what they need to fully participate.

What if we could remove some of those barriers before a student ever has to ask?

Here are a few ways to start:

๐Ÿ“ฑ Make digital materials accessible from the beginning. Use headings, alt text for meaningful images, captions on videos, readable fonts, and good color contrast. Make sure documents and PDFs work with assistive technology.

๐Ÿ“ฃ Share information in more than one way. Important instructions given verbally can also be provided in writing. Clear schedules, deadlines, and expectations can make things easier for everyone.

๐Ÿซ Think beyond the classroom. Accessibility matters during field trips, assemblies, sporting events, clubs, orientations, performances, after-school activities, and school celebrations too.

๐Ÿ’ฌ Ask instead of assuming. Students with disabilities know a lot about what works for them. Listen and include them in conversations about access.

โ™ฟ Don't wait for a barrier. When planning a lesson, activity, program, or event, ask:
"What might prevent someone from fully participating?โ€

Accessibility isn't just about providing an accommodation when someone asks. It's about creating schools and communities where people with disabilities can participate, belong, and have equal opportunities from the start.

๐Ÿ’š And you don't have to figure it all out on your own!

Whether you're a student with a disability, a parent or family member navigating accessibility needs, or a school, classroom, organization, or program working to become more accessible, reach out to empower: abilities.

We love supporting students and families with disabilities and working alongside schools and community partners who want to identify barriers, improve accessibility, and make their programs and services more welcoming and inclusive.

Accessibility is better when we work on it together.

Hereโ€™s to a school year filled with learning, welcoming environments, independence, opportunity, and fewer barriers! ๐Ÿ’š
