📚 MASONIC MONDAY | Why the Letter G?
You’ve probably seen it before.
The Square and Compasses, perhaps the most recognizable symbol of Freemasonry, often contains a single letter at its center:
G
But why?
For Freemasons, that simple letter directs our attention toward two profound ideas:
God and Geometry.
📐 GEOMETRY: THE SCIENCE OF THE BUILDER
Long before modern machinery, computers, lasers, or engineering software, builders raised enormous structures using mathematics, observation, measurement, and geometry.
The ancient craftsman understood something fundamental:
You cannot build well without order.
A foundation must be properly laid.
Angles must be true.
Measurements must be accurate.
Each stone must occupy its proper place within the larger design.
A small error at the foundation can become an enormous problem as the structure rises.
That lesson translates remarkably well from architecture to life.
Freemasonry developed from the imagery and traditions of the builder’s craft, but instead of asking a man merely to construct a better building, it asks him to consider how he is constructing himself.
Are his principles sound?
Is his character true?
Are his actions consistent with what he claims to believe?
What kind of structure is he building with the days of his life?
Geometry therefore becomes more than mathematics.
It becomes a reminder of order, proportion, harmony, and design.
🌎 FROM CREATION TO THE CREATOR
And that brings us to the other great idea represented by the letter G:
God.
Freemasonry is not a religion, nor does it tell a man how he must worship God.
But belief in a Supreme Being stands at the foundation of the Craft.
For the Mason, contemplating the extraordinary order of creation naturally leads to contemplation of its Creator.
Consider the mathematical laws governing the universe.
The movements of planets.
The patterns found throughout nature.
The remarkable precision with which the physical world operates.
From the smallest structures we can observe to the enormous movements of the heavens, we encounter order everywhere.
The builder looks at a great structure and understands that there was a plan.
The Mason looks at creation and is reminded of the Grand Architect of the Universe.
🏛️ AND THAT IS WHERE THE TWO IDEAS MEET.
God and Geometry.
Creator and creation.
Design and order.
The architect and the plan.
The Square and Compasses themselves are instruments of measurement. They remind us that a good builder does not simply guess whether his work is true.
He measures it against a standard.
Freemasonry asks a man to do the same thing with his life.
Not:
“Am I better than the man standing beside me?”
But:
“How does my life measure against the principles I claim to live by?”
Am I honest?
Am I fair?
Do I control my temper and passions?
Do I keep my word?
Do I help someone who needs me?
Am I becoming a better husband, father, neighbor, friend, and citizen?
Because building character isn’t terribly different from building anything else worthwhile.
It requires a foundation.
It requires a plan.
It requires the proper tools.
And above all…
It requires constant attention to the work.
Perhaps that’s one reason a single letter at the center of a simple emblem can give a Mason so much to contemplate.
G
God.
Geometry.
And the reminder that our lives, like the structures of the ancient builders, should be constructed deliberately, carefully, and according to principles that are true.
