Cafe Jiwa, coming soon to Yuanchang Township! ☕ 🎉

We have keys and a signed lease! We were approached by someone in the community asking if we had interest in renting out their space, and after we took a look we instantly knew it was the answer to our prayers. We have a storefront first floor and two-unit-wide 2nd and 3rd floors. It's more space than we know what to do with at the moment (almost 11,000 sq ft!!), but we know that God has prepared this location for us to support the migrant workers in Yunlin County, Taiwan. Now the work of minor renovations, menu preparation, lots of shopping, and so many other tasks begins!!

Because of cultural differences and common occurrences of racial discrimination, few Southeast Asian migrant workers leave the known boundaries of their home or dormitories even on their days off while working in Taiwan. Jiwa is looking to open a cafe and community center where they feel safe and like they can be themselves, thus contributing to and benefiting from an encouraging community.

Migrant workers pursue foreign jobs because of the economic lifeline it brings to their families. Jiwa seeks to meet these workers in their new, often unwanted, environment to provide encouraging community as well as providing job skill training that will hopefully allow them to find meaningful employment once they return to their home country.

Many migrant workers spend years away from their families in order to better provide for them. Being far away from friends and families means that migrant workers are in need of a loving and authentic community, one which Jiwa seeks to provide.

Many female workers work as domestic care workers taking care of elderly Taiwanese while male workers often work in factories, on fishing boats, or in agriculture.

The majority of Indonesian workers in Taiwan come from these five provinces. Nathan & Laura previously lived in West Java and have been able to use their very limited knowledge of the Sundanese language with some of the migrant workers from West Java here in Taiwan.

It's a small world and with many migrant workers from Java, Jiwa International is focused on leveraging it's partnerships in the US, Taiwan, and Indonesia to reach out to and care for these people. Join us!

In order to maintain its position as a global technological center, Taiwan relies on many "invisible workers" from other countries to keep other parts of the Taiwanese economy running smoothly. This allows the many engineers and professionals in the information and communication technology industry to focus on helping Taiwan's broader economy develop. It takes a village, right?!

Let's not allow these invisible workers to remain invisible. All human beings are made in the image of God and deserve respect and fair legal protections, regardless of what industry they work in.
