Why are we called the Rockets?

In 1949, Linde (Miller) Uffleman, who was a freshman at the time, submitted “Rocket” as a mascot suggestion.

There’s a rumor that some of the other suggestions included the Skunks! 😂 While that certainly would have been a memorable choice and perhaps a humorous nod to our “stinky” little town, we have to thank Linde for coming up with a much more attractive idea!

Over the years, there has even been some speculation that Spring Grove became the Rockets because of the Space Race. But that can't be the case! We were already Rockets before the Space Race even began.

HOMECOMING WEEK!

The tradition developed in American colleges in the early 1900s.
In 1911, Missouri football coach Chester Brewer encouraged alumni to return to Columbia for a big football game. More than 10,000 people reportedly came back for the event. It included a parade and other festivities surrounding the game.
Other colleges, including Baylor and the University of Illinois, also have early claims to homecoming traditions, so historians generally describe Missouri as one of the earliest and most influential versions, rather than definitively "the first."

Memorial Scholarships for 2026-2027

Have you lost someone special and are looking for a meaningful way to honor their memory?

Consider creating a Memorial Scholarship through the Spring Grove Area Scholarship Fund. A scholarship can be established as a one-time award to a Spring Grove graduate or as an annual scholarship that continues to make an impact year after year.

We would love the opportunity to discuss with you, hear about the person you want to honor. Together, we can create a scholarship that reflects who they were and what mattered most to them.
Their story can become part of someone else's future.

We appreciate all our sponsors throughout the year, whether the contribution is large or small, every bit helps. Today, we would like to spotlight a sponsor of the SGASF, , located in our community. Recently, a sponsor of our summer golf outing, their impact was greatly appreciated as we continue to grow and provide for our upcoming seniors at SG.

Well That’s Random…
Graduation caps have a specific name: they're called mortarboards, because they're shaped somewhat like the boards historically used by bricklayers.
