Today, the City of Somerset joined Pulaski County Government and the Lake Cumberland Diversity Collective to officially proclaim October as Blindness Awareness Month.
Pulaski County Judge-Executive Marshall Todd, front left, and Somerset City Attorney John Adams, front right, signed the proclamation with Lake Cumberland Diversity Collective members Ashley Homrich, back left, Bailey Patterson, back right, and Somerset resident Stephen Perseghin, center.
The proclamation honors the Blind, DeafBlind and low-vision members of our community — our neighbors, co-workers, classmates and friends — and the ways they make Somerset and Pulaski County stronger.
It also calls upon everyone to help build a more inclusive community in these ways:
Schools, colleges and universities — To offer full training opportunities to blind students.
Employers — To recognize the skills and talent blind job seekers and employees bring to the workplace.
Residents and visitors — To recognize the white cane and guide dog as tools of independence, and stay alert to blind pedestrians on our streets and sidewalks.
Blindness can happen to anyone, at any stage of life. Through this proclamation, we commit to the education necessary and the support of access tools so all residents can reach their fullest potential.
