Hello friends. Lot's happening in the Town of Somers this weekend - the Somers America250 Celebration Field Road Park and the Hartford County 4-H Fair at the Four Town Fair Grounds on Egypt Road.

Now that the budget referendum has passed — what have we learned?

First: thank you, Somers. Getting here took real engagement from our whole community, and that's something to build on.

Here's the big takeaway: going forward, the Town of Somers needs to look at its revenue potential as much as it looks at its spending. Both sides of the ledger matter — and for years, we've focused mostly on one.

Let's talk about why that balance matters - using recent data published by CCM CT about The Town of Somers compared to Tolland County:

📈 We have the highest home values in the entire county — but rank 9th of 13 in per-capita income. Our homes are desirable, but families and seniors feel every increase.

🏠 85.6% of our housing is owner-occupied. When the town needs revenue, it comes from resident homeowners — not from a broad commercial base.

🏛️ 15.8% of our property is tax-exempt — the 2nd-highest share in the county. A smaller taxable base is carrying the load, and our tax rate already sits right at the county median.

The picture is clear: Somers has been funding a full-service town almost entirely from its homeowners. The good news is that we have room to grow.

The opportunity? Every dollar of new commercial value is a dollar that doesn't come from your tax bill. By carefully broadening our tax base — thoughtful, targeted growth that fits Somers — we can protect our services, steady the mill rate, and take some of the pressure off residents.

This isn't a choice between growth and character. Done right, a healthier tax base is exactly what lets us protect the town we love.

Attention parents of middle schoolers and high schoolers in the Town of Somers! The CCM Scholarship Contest is open!

As Connecticut's largest nonpartisan organization of municipal leaders, CCM CT represents 167 towns and cities across our state. They work every day to improve the lives of residents, but to shape the future, they need to hear from our students.

CCM's Scholarship contest is an opportunity for students around the state to share their vision and make their voices heard by local leaders. CCM wants students to tell us what makes local government cool, through an essay, poem, photo, video, painting, multimedia project, or any other medium that inspires their answer.

The contest is open from June 15th to September 15th for grades 6-12. A winning submission from the middle school category and a winning submission for the high school category will be chosen to win a $1,000 scholarship and recognition at the annual CCM convention in front of municipal officials.
