Thank you to the Somers Fire Department - volunteer, career, and part time - for your selflessness in protecting us, our residences, our businesses, our guests, and our neighbors! You're not a line item in our budget, rather you're an investment in our community, and we're extremely grateful.

Today, on International Firefighters’ Day, we take a moment to recognize and honor the dedication, sacrifice, and courage of firefighters everywhere.

Here in Somers, we are proud to serve our community with an incredible team of both volunteer and career members who answer the call, day and night, without hesitation. Your commitment to protecting our community does not go unnoticed.

We also extend our gratitude to our mutual aid partners who stand with us on calls big and small. Your teamwork and reliability are a vital part of what keeps our region safe.

We also join communities around the world in recognizing firefighters everywhere who put themselves in harm’s way to protect others. No matter the patch on their shoulder or where they are on the map, we are all part of the same brotherhood and sisterhood.

We also pause to remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty, including our own Capt. Craig Arnone, who was killed in the line of duty on December 8th, 1996. His courage and the courage of all fallen firefighters will never be forgotten.

Thank you for your service, your sacrifice, and your unwavering dedication.

Stay safe.

Just weeks ahead of the May 19th Budget Referendum, the State of CT announced today that the Town of Somers will receive $653,556 in Supplemental State Aid.

Here's how the numbers break down for Somers:

Supplemental Education Aid: $227,706

Supplemental Town Aid: $425,850

Total Supplemental Aid for Somers: $653,556

Regional Comparison
When comparing the FY 2027 Supplemental Aid allocated across our immediate neighboring and peer municipalities in north-central Connecticut, the funding levels reflect the differing sizes of local student populations and grand lists:

Stafford: $543,570 total ($382,060 in education aid and $161,510 in supplemental town aid)

Ellington: $478,298 total ($413,666 in education aid and $64,632 in supplemental town aid)

South Windsor: $533,781 total ($456,324 in education aid and $77,457 in supplemental town aid)

Enfield: $1,768,134 total ($1,192,946 in education aid and $575,188 in supplemental town aid)

Suffield: $1,215,455 total ($699,245 in education aid and $516,210 in supplemental town aid)

Tolland: $416,611 ($364,222 in education aid and $52,389 in supplemental town aid)

As shown by the comparison, Somers sits comfortably in the upper-middle range among our regional peers, which receive an average total aid of approximately $600,000–$750,000, while larger neighboring municipalities like Enfield receive a substantially higher proportional share due to population density and educational needs.

At the Somers EDC, we're dedicated to keeping our residents informed on these key data points as we work to advocate for sustainable growth.

Follow along as we continue to track how these resources translate into economic vitality for our community!
