We were so grateful to hear from local author, Katie Kruse, on the inspirations that led her to writing The Hummingbird Lesson. We are so thankful she shared her story with us not only at our Club meeting, but also on our Story Walk at Spaulding Park!

What a week it’s been! Spalding Park School asked “Would your Rotary Club members read the StoryWalk book to our students and hand out treats?” “Absolutely!” we said. By Friday nearly 400 students enjoyed treats. And we ALL enjoyed the book!

Congrats to West High School senior Andy Lam, our October 2026 Rotary Club of Sioux City Student of the Month. Andy has a 4.46 GPA, placing him first in his class. He is an AP Scholar with Distinction, a National Merit Semi-Finalist, and a member of Spanish National Honor Society. He is captain of the basketball and track teams, vice president of National Honor Society and a member of the Mayor’s Youth Commission. Andy has created a digital tool for the Siouxland Soup Kitchen and the Food Bank of Siouxland and started a Math Club at West High that could benefit West Middle students, too. Jim Vanderloo, Interim Superintendent of Sioux City Community Schools, recently addressed our Rotary Club along with his admin members Jarod Mozer, Amy Denney, Rebecca Rieken and Leslie Heying. They spoke of student achievement, special education, English Language Learners, staff recruitment and retention, facilities and more. The program is another good example of the excellent speakers at our Rotary meetings.

Enjoying the warm sunshine, these Sioux City Rotary Club volunteers celebrated a beautiful fall day by installing a new book “The Tallypo: A Ghost Story.” Come visit our StoryWalk at Spalding Park at the corner of Gordon Drive and Stone Avenue. You”ll enjoy a spooky story and the good feeling that comes with walking outdoors to read pages posted at our 20 stations.
