Congratulations to October's Teacher of the Month, Kevin Habroun!

The Simi Valley Education Foundation is proud to announce the October Teacher of the Month (TOTM) - Kevin Habroun from Royal High School.

As a 10/11 AP US and World history teacher, not only does Kevin prepare students for the AP exam, but he demonstrates an outstanding dedication to students by going out of his way to host additional study sessions. He has served as a mentor for student teachers and shows an ongoing initiative for improving that quality of education and services to students.

The Teacher of the Month Program highlights educators across the Simi Valley Unified School District who demonstrate outstanding performance and make meaningful contributions to their students and schools.

Each month, honorees are celebrated with tokens of appreciation from generous community partners, including Chick-fil-A, Grand Canyon University, Harley’s Bowl, Iverson Construction, Logix Federal Credit Union, Simi Valley Chamber of Commerce, Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center, Simi Valley YMCA, Eric Little with State Farm Insurance, Ventura County Credit Union, and the Walt Fuller Foundation. Local dignitaries also present personalized certificates of recognition, reinforcing the strong bond between schools and the broader community.

“Together, we send a clear message that the business community supports and values the dedication of our teachers,” said Ryan Fowler, Board President of the Simi Valley Education Foundation.

Since its founding in 1989, the Simi Valley Education Foundation has invested more than $2.5 million into Simi Valley public schools through innovative classroom grants, school-wide projects, department enhancements, and scholarships for graduating seniors.

For more information about the Teacher of the Month program, please contact Cindy Jacoby at (877) SIMI-KID or visit svef.org.

06/13/2025

It is with a heavy heart that I announce my resignation from the Simi Valley Unified School District Board of Education, effective June 16, 2025. I am grateful for the opportunity to have served our school community for nearly three years and hope to be able to do so again in the future.

In my time on the Board, we have expanded opportunities for our sixth grade students by shifting all sixth graders to middle school campuses, built inclusive playgrounds at two elementary schools, finished quad spaces at our high schools, opened a Dual Language Academy and so much more. Perhaps one of the most important accomplishments was completing new security fencing at our remaining school sites, which was one of the concerns that led me to run for this position. I am extremely proud of the work the Board has done during my tenure.

I remain committed to our public schools and it is with tremendous sadness that I step down from the Board due to a concern regarding part of the California Government Code known as Section 1090.

I became a Trustee on December 9, 2022. In the spring of 2023, the District hired my spouse to teach American Sign Language at the high school level. Prior to my spouse applying for the position, I asked the District whether it was legal for him to become a teacher within the District while I was serving as a Board member. I was assured that this was legal and there were no concerns or issues.

However, the District’s legal counsel has now expressed a concern that due to the sequence of events - that I was on the Board at the time my spouse applied for and received a teaching position - the Government Code may have been violated.

In an abundance of caution, to ensure continuity for my spouse’s students, and out of concern for our family’s well-being, I am stepping down from my position on the Board. Please know that I do not make this decision lightly. I take the commitment I made to our community very seriously and being unable to serve out my full term is agonizing.

Legal counsel has informed me that resignation from the Board is the appropriate course of action to take. In the coming days and weeks, it will be up to the remaining members of the Board to determine how best to fill the vacancy.

I thank the students, families, teachers and staff for the opportunity to serve you as a Board member. It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life. In the future, I hope that I can again serve our schools, as I still have a lot of energy and passion to devote to education in Simi Valley, taking our students from here to anywhere.
