When it gets extra rainy, the outdoor areas for resident ducks and chickens can start to get a little muddy and we need to add more substrate for better drainage and to keep those feathers clean!

Well, some days don’t start out too cute. 🚨

This morning’s surprise was discovering that the chickens’ waterer had broken overnight, soaking more than a quarter of the coop, mats, and bedding. 💧

That meant shoveling out wet bedding, hauling heavy stall mats outside to rinse, shop-vac’ing the coop floor, and waiting for everything to dry with our big fan before putting it all back together with new shavings AND a new waterer. 💪

It’s not a glamorous side of running an animal-centered nonprofit, but it’s one of the most important parts.

With over 20+ rescued animals depending on us every single day, there’s always something that needs cleaning, fixing, feeding, or repairing. We still wouldn’t trade it for the happiness these friends bring us… even on the messy days. 😝

As we head into the week, we’re running low on some every day essentials:

⚠️ Impromptu turtle rescue today! 🐢💚
While driving through a fast part of town, we spotted a turtle tucked tightly into its shell at the edge of the road. We turned around to check on the turtle friend & moved it to the river’s edge. A few minutes later, turtle walked into the water and swam away. 💚

Moments earlier, we had passed a smaller turtle that had been struck on the road, so we were extra grateful this one got another chance. 🤞

In this summer heat, humidity, & wildfire smoke, wildlife may be under extra stress. Please keep an extra eye out for animals crossing roads, slow down when possible, and if it’s safe to do so, please lend a helping hand or contact a local non profit who can help. 🐢🤝

Nessa is a beautiful, athletic puppy who loves people and is looking for an active family that will continue her training. She enjoys fetch, exploring, and learning new things. She’s spayed, vaccinated, crate trained, and ready for her forever home.

‼️👋🏻 NEW INTRODUCTIONS! After a difficult start and an over two-weeks long stay at animal control, these cream-colored ducklings & their duck companion have officially arrived at Mystery Meadows after being rescued out of Peoria. 💛🚙🌾

They’re all still learning that humans can be gentle & that opening their enclosure door doesn’t always mean stress. For now, the ducks prefer sticking close together in the grass, cautiously observing the world from a safe distance, and spending plenty of time splashing in their pool. 💛🦆

And no, you aren’t seeing double! Their adult duck companion looks almost exactly like Asteroid’s (bigger) twin.

When their quarantine is complete, they’ll eventually be joining our resident duck flock alongside Stormy and Asteroid.

At Mystery Meadows, ducks are not products or possessions- they are individuals with their own personalities, friendships, fears, & favorite sunny spots.

It’s that time of year- our precious migrating birds travel far and wide during the night and often become confused by our artificial lights. Let’s keep birds safe and prevent collisions by keeping our outside lights off overnight during peak migration times. 🐦 💗
