ALONG THE POTOMAC — Today, Shepherdstown is recognized as West Virginia's oldest town (Virginia in 1862) and is the home of Shepherd University. It was Thomas Shepherd who originally took up a tract of land here in 1734. The Virginia Assembly later established it as "Mecklenburg" in 1762.

When the war started in 1861, many locals enlisted with the Confederate army but the surrounding area also produced a number of Union recruits. The town took in several dying and wounded men from South Mountain and Antietam. Care may have been provided for anywhere between 5,000-8,000 casualties.
Nearly every standing and able structure was converted into a hospital.

Located on the edge of town, Elmwood Cemetery contains the remains of over 100 Southerners who were killed at Sharpsburg. Of the 281 total Confederate veterans buried here, Henry Kyd Douglas is certainly one of the most notable. Douglas was born in Shepherdstown and raised right across the Potomac River in Maryland at Ferry Hill. Having served as a staff officer to Stonewall Jackson, Douglas later wrote "I Rode With Stonewall."
