What a night for the bees! 🐝

Bee Happy Hour at the Johnson County KS Arts and Heritage Center last week was the celebration, but the collaboration started long before that evening. Johnson County Park and Recreation District - JCPRD and its partners brought together public art, native bee habitat, horticulture, nutrition and community connection to create something truly unique.
Johnson County K-State Extension was proud to be part of that process from the beginning — from Extension Master Naturalists work with the artists, to bee-inspired food and mocktails from our Master Food Volunteers, to flowers gathered from Extension Master Gardener Demonstration Gardens by our Master Gardeners.
Thank you to the artists, JCPRD, Finkle + Williams Architecture, SWT Design, The Parks and Recreation Foundation of Johnson County and everyone who helped bring the project to life.
We can't wait to see where they end up and watch them evolve.

Join us this Saturday, Oct. 17 for the Cars in the Park Car Show from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Shawnee Mission Theatre in the Park! Now in its 16th year, Cars in the Park is a major annual fundraising event benefiting Adaptive Recreation programming and JCPRD’s Special Olympics team, the JCPRD Stormin' Rangers. Proceeds from the show benefit Stormin’ Rangers athletes by keeping program costs affordable, providing scholarships, and allowing the purchase of equipment and supplies.

Registration the day of the show for vehicles is $40. For spectators, there is a suggested donation of $10 per family.

There will be a live DJ, food trucks, and a 50/50 raffle. Local organization Kids & Cars will be on hand with Hot Wheels® cars and tracks, and the KC Dream Team Car Club, a community-focused non-profit, will be showing some exotic vehicles. In addition, representatives of The Parks and Recreation Foundation of Johnson County will be on hand to collect donations and greet visitors.

We are always thrilled to support JCPRD’s incredible Public Art and Natural Resources programs! The Bee Habitat Project invited local artists to combine artistic creativity and innovation with ecological stewardship to provide healthy nesting environments for native bees. The works are beautiful, playful, and functional and will be installed in our parks next spring! 🐝 🎨 🍯 🌼
