It's summertime and that means lots of yard sales. Everyone loves a bargain, but when it comes to car seats, it's not a good deal. Car seats that have been used for other children are not automatically unsafe, but you need to know a few things. First, we recommend you personally know the person you are getting the car seat from. Someone you trust to be honest. You must know the crash history of the seat. Has it ever been involved in a moderate to severe crash? Are all labels present and readable - especially the manufacturer date and model number? Does the car seat have any missing parts, cracks, frayed harnesses, sticky buckles, or stress marks on the plastic shell? These are all signs the car seat has met its useful life and needs to be retired. If everything looks okay, there is still one more step. The car seat MUST be free from any recalls OR had recalls repaired (if that was an option). You can check for recalls at https://www.nhtsa.gov/recalls -seats.

If you are hosting a yard sale, you need to know that Consumer Product Safety laws and regulations apply to you, too. These laws apply to thrift stores, consignment stores, charities, and individuals holding yard sales and flea markets. Used products have caused injuries and deaths and have been the subject of numerous recalls. Check out this Reseller's Guide and FAQs to make sure you're informed and safe. https://www.cpsc.gov/Business--Manufacturing/Business-Education/ResaleThrift-Stores-Information-Center
