Playwright Daniel Janoff is bringing his new piece, “Love Underground,” to the 2026 Writers Playground!

Daniel’s work moves between stage and screen, often exploring the space between everyday absurdity and human vulnerability.

Daniel Janoff is a writer whose work explores the friction between human vulnerability and everyday absurdity. A semifinalist for the Academy Nicholl Fellowships in Screenwriting, his screen credits include the television pilot Huge, produced by Jam* Productions. His work for the stage includes Heroes and Villains, which premiered at Chicago’s Collaboraction Theatre Company.

Meet Charlene A. Donaghy, our next playwright featured in our Writer's Playground event. Her play, “Best Wine with Lemon Muffins,” is part of this year’s lineup!

An award-winning writer and educator, Charlene’s work spans theater, screenwriting, fiction, and more, with her writing produced and recognized both nationally and internationally.

Charlene A. Donaghy is an award-winning educator, playwright, monologist, screenwriter, fiction writer, and producer whose work has been produced, published, and honored across the United States and internationally. Her craft book, One Bold Voice: Writing Compelling Monologues, and play collection, Bones of Home and Other Plays, are published by Hansen Publishing. Charlene teaches playwriting, screenwriting, and fiction in the University of Nebraska Omaha's Creative Writing MFA and theatre and cinema in UNO's Department of Theatre. We’re preparing for our Writers Playground event with a series introducing our playwrights! ✍️

First off is Liam Castellan, whose ten-minute play “Dating In the Workplace and Other Acts of Courage” will be featured on September 4th.

Liam brings experience as both a director and theater administrator to this year’s festival, focusing on developing new work and supporting local playwrights.
Liam Castellan is co-moderator of Berkshire Voices, Great Barrington Public Theater’s workshop for local playwrights, and directed several readings and Skills Labs there. Liam has directed for Cardinal Stage, Jewish Theatre of Bloomington, Hedgerow Theatre, Curio Theatre Company and others. Constellation Stage & Screen commissioned his site-specific audio drama Predisposed to Violins: a Sherlock Holmes Adventure in 2021 (available on New Play Exchange). MFA in Directing (Indiana U), B.Sci. in Theatre (Northwestern). He lives in Pittsfield, MA and is the Development Operations and Database Manager for Shakespeare & Company. www.liamcastellan.com

🎬 We’ve reached the final film. Tomorrow, we bring The Divine Sister to life.

“The Bishop’s Wife” rounds out Charles Busch’s list of favorite Hollywood religious movies that helped inspire The Divine Sister.

“I’ve never seen the Whitney Houston remake all the way through, but I do get a kick out of the 1940’s original. World War II spawned a whole genre of angelic fantasy films; the most famous of which was ‘It’s A Wonderful Life.’ ‘The Bishop’s Wife’ isn’t nearly as good, but Cary Grant is a much sexier angel than Clarence.” - CB

Charles also has plenty to say about Gladys Cooper, who appears throughout his list:

“In this film, she plays a fabulously wealthy, guilt-ridden widow who wants to build a cathedral to honor her late husband. Nobody does tight-lipped, bitter intensity better than the divine Gladys. And nobody is better than Gladys Cooper when she ultimately sees the light as she does in this film and ‘The Song of Bernadette.’” - CB

Ten films. Countless larger-than-life characters. And one very funny play born from it all.

Tomorrow, Charles Busch returns to the Sharon Playhouse as the playwright and star of The Divine Sister for a one-night-only staged reading, joined by members of the original 2010 Off-Broadway cast.

This rare reunion is also a special benefit supporting the Sharon Playhouse Fund.

🎬 Not every inspiration for The Divine Sister wears a habit.

“Yentl” is next on Charles Busch’s list of favorite Hollywood religious films, and Charles has “a great and genuine fondness” for it.

“The anti-Streisand faction would like to poke fun at it and diminish its brilliance, but it really is a heart-felt and touching movie. I’ve never read the original Isaac Bashevis Singer short story, so I couldn’t care less about the liberties Barbra took with it. ‘Yentl’ is a very satisfying screen musical and perhaps the last time we saw a great performer do a musical number onscreen that wasn’t over-edited to give one seizures.”

Of course, Charles also has thoughts about one particularly campy moment:

“There is, however, a campy moment when Barbra, who’s been posing as a boy, is alone in her room. She is overcome with her mad passion for Mandy Patinkin and begins to undress herself in front of the mirror. She sings a beautiful song by Marilyn and Alan Bergman, ‘The Way He Makes Me Feel.’ At a certain point in the song, there is a quick cut and suddenly Barbra has on a full glamour makeup beat, and her short, boy wig is adjusted to look more feminine. Unfortunately, it all makes her look a bit like a tough woman executive at Tri-Star.”

It’s another glimpse into the blend of sincerity, theatricality, and camp that defines Charles’s work.

See that spirit come to life when Charles returns to the Sharon Playhouse on August 28 to perform The Divine Sister, the comedy he wrote and originally starred in, alongside members of the original Off-Broadway cast.
