After a bittersweet invasion claimed over one hundred red cedars on our Hamlin Preserve, our stewardship staff and volunteers have been busy transforming the salvaged wood into lumber for bluebird boxes. Using a portable chainsaw mill, we’ve created beautiful boards that will be used across our preserves-- and for our bird box building workshop on our upcoming Community Day on June 6th. Check out the link in our bio for more Community Day information and registration for all the many workshops, guided hikes, and other activities taking place.

And thank you SO much to our volunteers for their hard work! Interested in joining us? Register as a volunteer on our website!

The Connecticut state flower, mountain laurel, is our May ! Known for its evergreen leaves and pale pink flowers, this plant isn't just pretty: it's an ecological powerhouse. Mountain laurel has a unique symbiotic relationship with ericoid mycorrhizae, a fungi that brings a significant amount of nitrogen and carbon to the soil. So when you admire their flowers at our Sharon Mountain, D’Alton, Mary Moore, Von Ahn, or Skiff Mountain Preserves, remember the forest-feeding magic happening underground!

Wanted: for the degradation of wetland habitats, Japanese Knotweed is the May ! This plant, with its heart-shaped leaves and small pale blooms, is an expert at ecosystem destruction. Not only does it inhibit the growth of other plants, it forms dense thickets, severely damaging ecosystems, degrading soil health, and shading out natives. If pulling, make sure to remove all shoots, roots, and rhizomes-- and do NOT mow it, that would only cause more growth. Foliar herbicide application is most effective from August through September, but avoid spraying it during flowering to prevent harm to pollinators.

Resources and information on invasive plant management can be found on our website.
