Wanted: for the degradation of wetland habitats, Japanese Knotweed is the May ! This plant, with its heart-shaped leaves and small pale blooms, is an expert at ecosystem destruction. Not only does it inhibit the growth of other plants, it forms dense thickets, severely damaging ecosystems, degrading soil health, and shading out natives. If pulling, make sure to remove all shoots, roots, and rhizomes-- and do NOT mow it, that would only cause more growth. Foliar herbicide application is most effective from August through September, but avoid spraying it during flowering to prevent harm to pollinators.
