“I can’t point to a single defining moment that inspired me to work with older adults. Rather, I slowly discovered this deep conviction that older adults deserve our best care. In a way, I see this work as shaping the future of my own care if I’m lucky enough to be in their shoes one day. What I love most about my work is cracking seemingly complex clinical problems simply by listening a little longer or looking a little deeper. The answers are almost always there—they just can’t be rushed.

Every time I see a patient in clinic for the first time after meeting them during a hospitalization, they re-introduce themselves as their whole self. I notice how they style their hair, the colors they choose to wear, and the natural cadence of their voice when they are unburdened from acute illness. In those moments, I get to fully appreciate the human our team worked so hard to restore.

Most people view my passion for geriatrics as an odd preference. GAPNA’s slogan, We Are Your People, resonates with me because its members not only appreciate the nature of this calling but also share that deep affinity for our patient population.” - Daniela Cavallaro

The future of advanced nursing education and our healthcare workforce is at stake.

Gerontological Advanced Practice Nurses Association stands with national nursing organizations in opposing the Department of Education’s final rule excluding graduate nursing programs from the professional degree definition.

This decision creates unnecessary barriers for advanced practice registered nurses and threatens access to the educational pathways needed to prepare the next generation of clinical leaders.

At a time when our nation faces growing healthcare workforce shortages and an aging population with complex needs, limiting access to federal financial support for graduate nursing education sends the wrong message.

GAPNA remains committed to advocating for APRNs, graduate nursing education, and the patients and communities we serve.
