Harvesting Hope NC is looking for volunteers in the community garden! The Team meets behind Selma Baptist Church Friday mornings at 8 a.m. Once the weather cools, that will change to 9 a.m. arrival. We'd be delighted to have you join us! Absolutely no experience is required and training is provided. Ages 12 and up welcome.
Hi everyone,
This is Tiffany from the garden behind the church. I wanted to give a few updates on our progress and show some beautiful produce from our recent pick (along with a glimpse of our bees). This year has been challenging, between the long stretch of drought followed by torrential rains. Despite this, we are completing our most successful Summer season ever. As a matter of fact, we are on track to potentially have our best year yet. Perhaps the only thing that hasn't gone as planned has been our wildflower installation. We sowed two pounds of seeds, but because of the extreme weather conditions, we had to put a temporary pause on that project until the temperatures begin to moderate again. (You can see one of the orange zinnia blooms pictured below).
We have a few other exciting things happening. The bees are thriving and growing in number! Darryl and I are taking classes from a doctor of entomology and master beekeeper to receive specialized training. We hope to launch a therapeutic beekeeping program in the future for military service members who have had difficulty reintegrating after a deployment. Oh, and we should have honey to sell too! In addition, our nonprofit recently received a certification declaring the Selma garden a nationally recognized wildlife habitat. We're very proud of this, as we have been working toward this designation for the past few months.
This past week, we also received a wonderful opportunity to help some medically challenged seniors who are struggling with extreme poverty. Within 24 hours of that call, we loaded an entire SUV with nutritious meals. We have other opportunities on the horizon as well, but please know we are doing what we can to positively impact Johnston County residents.
That brings me to my next point...we are looking for volunteers! Our Team meets behind the church Friday mornings at 8 a.m. Once the weather cools, that will change to 9 a.m. arrival.
