💔🌈 It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of our beloved rescue goat, Tonks. 💔😭

Many of you know that Tonks came to The Random Ranch alongside Lupin and Luna. If you’re a Harry Potter fan, you’ll recognize where their names came from. While Lupin and Luna are still with us, our sweet little Tonks has crossed the Rainbow Bridge. 🌈💔

Tonks was an absolute joy to care for and one of those special souls who left a mark on everyone she met. As she aged, she required increasingly specialized care. After losing all of her teeth, she transitioned to a soaked diet so she could continue to enjoy her meals. As her tiny body struggled to regulate temperature, she wore double coats to keep warm through the colder months. More recently, cancer began taking its toll, requiring medication, careful monitoring, and a great deal of love and attention.

When her quality of life could no longer be maintained, we made the heartbreaking decision to humanely euthanize her and give her the grace, comfort, and dignity she deserved. 💔

She leaves behind her son, Lupin, and her dear friend Luna, along with all of us who were lucky enough to know and love her.

The truth is that as an animal sanctuary, there will be many posts like this in the years ahead. Many of the animals who call The Random Ranch home are geriatric, elderly, and living well beyond the average lifespan of their species. We are incredibly grateful for every extra day, month, and year we get with them, but we also know that many are living on borrowed time.

Today, however, we choose to remember Tonks for the joy she brought, the resilience she showed, and the love she gave so freely. Please enjoy this video of our sweet little Tonks and celebrate a life that was deeply loved from beginning to end. ❤️🐐💔

Run free, sweet girl. You will be missed more than words can ever express. 🌈😭❤️

Good morning from The Random Ranch. Jellybean, Diesel, and Pandora each came running up through the valley one by one… and then Brookie brought up the rear, because every good parade needs a cute little donkey bringing up the tail end.

Community is everything to us at The Random Ranch. 🖤🤠🐾

One of the greatest parts of being here in this amazing community is watching people come together to make life better for the animals we love so much. 🐑✨ We were incredibly honored to be chosen by Eagle Scouts Troop 311 for a project that will make a HUGE difference for our ranch family. 🛠️🌾

The troop worked hard cleaning up and improving Little John’s pen area by adding panels to safely expand his space. 🚜🪵 Because Little John is such a massive boy, we have to secure him during public visits since he doesn’t realize how big and strong he is 💪🐑 and could accidentally knock someone over just trying to say hello. 😂 Thanks to these improvements, he now has more room and a safer setup for both him and our visitors. 🖤

They also built an incredible grooming table for our giant guardian dogs! 🐶🛁✂️ Our volunteers regularly groom these massive pups, and having a proper table means they no longer have to sit on the hard ground while caring for them. 🙌 This thoughtful project will help both our volunteers and our dogs for years to come. 🐾✨

We absolutely LOVE being part of a community that cares this deeply about animals, service, and helping one another. ❤️🤝 Thank you to Eagle Scouts Troop 311 for your hard work, kindness, and dedication. You made a real difference here at The Random Ranch. 🌟🐑🐾

Tomorrow was supposed to be King’s birthday. April 20th. He would have been 22 years old. Instead I am writing this to tell you that we lost him just a few days ago.

Most of you knew him. You knew what he looked like when he walked toward you like he owned the earth beneath his feet, because he did. You knew those eyes. If you ever got to share a breath with him, you never forgot it.

What many of you may not know is that King was my mother’s horse. When I lost her suddenly, I inherited him. Many of you who knew me growing up know that I had horses as a child — but that chapter felt long closed. I had no intentions of ever having horses in my life again. And then there was King. The Random Ranch, the animals, the camps, everything you see here — it all exists because of him. His name, this place, this life — it was all random. And it was all because of him.

He was my heart. He was my reason. I’ve known so many horses in my life, but there has never been one like him. Not even close.

His favorite things were simple — sharing breaths with me, which we did together almost every single day, and making absolutely sure he got his ear scratches in. Any time he saw me in the field he came straight to me. He had that effect on everyone — anybody who ever met King just loved him, because he was pure personality and pure sweetness wrapped up in the most beautiful animal I’ve ever known.

We lost him to colic. We fought for him, we got him to surgery, we did everything we could. What they found inside told us his body had been carrying more than we knew — lipomas throughout his colon that had been quietly working against him. He was stoic and he was proud and he never let us see.

I am devastated in a way I don’t have words for yet. But I am trying hard to find his strength — to go back out there every day and continue the work he inspired me to build.

🖤 Thank you all for loving him too. I will miss his smell, his breath, his ear scratches, giant cuddles and of course his big smile.

There will never be another King.

Cow’lvin is getting a little spa day today at The Random Ranch 🐂✨ Hoof trims might not be glamorous, but they’re so important for keeping our big guy healthy, happy, and strutting comfortably around the pasture.

We’re grateful for the care that helps our animals thrive—because every little trim makes a big difference 💛

🤍 For the past six weeks, we’ve been keeping a little secret here at The Random Ranch…
His name is Bodhi, and he’s the newest — and currently smallest — member of our guardian dog crew. 🤩🐾

Bodhi is 3½ months old and has been with us for about six weeks, quietly settling in, learning the ranch routine, and beginning the long journey of becoming a livestock guardian dog.

🎥 We also want to give a big thank you to Stella Hoepner, who chose The Random Ranch for her high school project. This video is part of the work she’s been doing with us, and we’re so grateful she wanted to help tell Bodhi’s story. 🤍

Around here, guardian dogs aren’t optional — they’re essential. Living alongside Colorado’s predators means these dogs are part of what keeps our animals safe every single day.

With Bear recently passing and our senior guardians getting older (Wyatt is 14, Mac is 10½, and Willow is 12½), we’re slowly and intentionally building the next generation of protectors so our older dogs can begin enjoying the retirement they’ve more than earned.

Bodhi is being raised alongside Hank, our 2-year-old Great Pyrenees rescue, and our experienced resident guardians who will help mentor him as he grows. Livestock guardian dogs aren’t born perfect — they’re stubborn, independent, chaotic little dinosaurs for the first year or two. But with patience, guidance, and the right environment, they grow into the calm, confident protectors you see working here. 🤍

For now, Bodhi is focusing on learning the ranch routine and getting comfortable with our volunteers and dogs, so meeting him in person will come later. Puppies grow fast though — so you’ll get to watch him grow up right here. 🐾

Thanks for giving us the space to do this the right way — quietly, intentionally, and always with the long game in mind.

Welcome to the ranch, little Bodhi. 🤩

What a gift today was! 🙌

After so many windy days, we finally caught a break — and our Thursday crew made the most of every calm, quiet minute. There were extra brushes, extra scratches, extra treats, and so much love shared all around. 🐂

The animals were relaxed, the volunteers were smiling, and the whole ranch just felt peaceful. Days like this refill everyone’s cup — two-legged and four-legged alike. 🤍

We’re so grateful for our Thursday crew and for every single person who shows up to love these amazing animals.
