Sebastopol Center for the Arts

Sebastopol Center for the Arts (SebArts) is a respected Northern California arts organization and when there isn’t a pandemic happening, we’re a popular hub within the Sonoma County Arts scene. We’re a dynamic, largely community funded, art space in downtown Sebastopol, with a track record of attracting over 50,000 artists and arts enthusiasts annually.

Be sure to catch Collaborative Practices in the SebArts gallery before the exhibition closes.

A retrospective of Bay Area artist Kate Haug, Collaborative Practices engages the history of technological innovation and political activism. Working both inside and outside of the gallery, Haug employs commercial production and enters into unorthodox environments—transforming public spaces in a transitory way.

Don't miss Collaborative Practices before it leaves the SebArts Gallery—Saturday, September 5 is the final day it will be on display.

Meet the Fall 2026 cohort of the SebArts Artist Accelerator — seven Sonoma County artists joining us September 1 through November 30 🍂

They work in ceramics, stained glass, printmaking, fiber, collage, watercolor, gouache, acrylic and mixed media. They're exploring perfectionism and the unknown, decomposition and growth, grief and compost, and the threads that connect us to our ancestors, to nature, and to each other.

Over three months, they'll work out of a shared studio here in the SebArts building, meet weekly for critiques and workshops, build out their branding, bookkeeping, and collector relationships, and show their work here and at an off-site exhibition.

We're so honored to have them. Stay tuned for special events and workshops — and come meet them in person this fall!

Generously sponsored by Creative Sonoma and the County of Sonoma.

Stay tuned for more!

Thirty-five years in the Sebastopol art scene, and Sally still lights up talking about it.

"What is astounding about this area is the number of artists, the number of opportunities artists have. People are supportive of one another. I look at our art center and see how it's grown, and all the people who find joy here. It's just an extraordinary place."

She's been reading a book called Art Cure about how essential the arts are to our mental and even physical health. "The arts are really essential to human beings, to how we express ourselves and keep our sanity."

A career in teaching shaped how she sees the work: "Helping other people find their medium is one of the most exciting things I do. Not everybody is going to become Rembrandt, but to see the joy people discover when they explore their artistic side is quite extraordinary."

And then there's the seeing itself. Helping someone appreciate a shadow, a color, a cloud — that's the part she loves best.

On being honored at this year's gala: "I am humbled. It's strange to be honored for something you do that you have to do."

That's exactly why we're honoring her. 🤍

Who wants to join a Booker Prize book club? The longlist just dropped: 13 novels, and our executive director, Serafina, is working her way through all of them.

If you're new to it: the Booker Prize is the big one for literary fiction in English. Awarded every year since 1969 to a single novel published in the UK or Ireland, judged by a rotating panel that reads everything submitted, this year, 163 books down to 13. The winner takes £50,000, but the real prize is what it does to a book: Booker novels get read for decades.

Past winners include Shuggie Bain, The Remains of the Day, Wolf Hall, and Midnight's Children.

This year's panel is chaired by classicist Mary Beard, with Jarvis Cocker among the judges. Shortlist comes September 22nd, and the winner is announced November 9th. Which gives us plenty of time to read! 📚

We have an incredible literary arts program at SebArts, so let's do this! A Booker book club 📖

Comment below if you're in, and tell us what you're reading from the list.

STATE OF THE ARTS with Serafina Palandech

The Bayeux Tapestry just pulled off one of the most elaborate art moves in history. 👀

The nearly 1,000-year-old, 70-meter-long masterpiece recently left France for the first time in centuries, making its way from Bayeux to London under an extraordinary, high-security operation. It traveled overnight through the Channel Tunnel in a custom climate-controlled, vibration-resistant case, with months of planning behind every detail.

And why all the fuss? Because this isn’t just an incredibly old piece of embroidery. The tapestry tells the story of the Norman conquest of England in 1066— and now, for the first time in nearly 1,000 years, it’s back on English soil.

So… how do you move a priceless piece of history without disturbing a stitch?
Serafina breaks it down in this week’s State of the Arts. 🎨✨
