The Brego Foundation

The Brego Foundation A Volunteer run 501c3 Organization dedicated to the Rescue, Rehabilitation, and Retirement of former racehorses and other horses in need of second careers.

We do this through:

Extensive Networking:
In partnership with a wide network of rescue organizations, The Brego Foundation activity seeks alternatives to the horrific fate of the slaughter pipeline for these former racehorses. Education and Advocacy:
We are consistently engaged in education and creating awareness in the community at large to the plight of Off the Track Thoroughbreds through th

e media and our extensive network. The Rescue, Rehabilitation and Rehoming of Off the Track Thoroughbreds:
The successful transition of our own rescued off the track thoroughbred, and his successful transition from racehorse to equine guide, has confirmed a life long belief we have held: horses can have a profound impact on the healing of humans if given the chance. The spirit of winning that resides in the heart of every racehorse can be transformed into a new career; whether that be in the show ring or as a Teacher/Healer. Former racehorses are actively engaged in working with youth, Veterans struggling with PTSD, individuals struggling with addition and companies and organizations desiring to transform their leadership modality. The Brego Foundation is committed to providing these horses an environment where they can blossom and transition into the right career for them.

Nearly ten years to the day this photo was taken, we lost this magnificent being to a strangulating lipoma. He will always be remembered as the gentle leader and Brego's best bud. We will miss you Sander, more than you know.

Still gorgeous

Please take a moment and sign this petition. It is an urgent call to end the abuse endured by thoroughbreds when they are shipped off to Puerto Rico for racing. They are often shipped by sea on 40ft shipping containers with little ventilation over long hours. Once they arrive they are run to death - literally. There are no guard rails to their well being.

Hundreds of horses at Camarero Racetrack in Puerto Rico suffer severe injuries and neglect, with over 700 euthanized since 2020. Join our call for immediate reforms to protect these horses, who have dedicated their lives to the sport, and are stripped of the dignity they deserve in life and death.

And this is why we retire them for life.

And this is why we retire them for life.

I am upset.
This page is not about me or other humans, it’s about equines in need. And the stupid bs comments are annoying, however, like the flies mentioned in comments, ultimately inconsequential.
I spent the first part of my morning, begging a stranger to kill their horse. How did this become my life?
Because people call us to take their senior horses, before they send to auction.
Now, understand, I applaud anyone seeking a solution. I do. And I return these calls to provide some missing information.
-Your old horse does not want to leave home.
-Your old horse, like you, has failing parts. Maybe sight loss, or hearing, arthritis, dental issues, maybe back pain, Cushings, insulin resistance, or even cancer. Many of these issues are not going to be cured with medical care, nor is a stranger going to invest that into your old horse.
-Auction is not a kind solution for a 30 year old horse. Confused, frightened, and betrayed, and they often know it.
-There is no wonderful home waiting for a 30+ year old horse. There are dealers, one may try to shave off 10 years and peddle her as a child’s pony, and once she can’t do the work, she will be flipped again. Another dealer may not bother, and just sell her for the weight of her meat. A private home may purchase her for the kids, which will last as long as the time it takes to get a vet bill, or a child to get hurt
-The rescues do pull from auction to prevent a catastrophic last end, but only a few horses. The odds are not good
-The senior horses we do save at auction are generally not brought in by the longtime owner, but by the second, or third “good home” you trusted. People who are not as invested as we hope you are
-Think about how you want to spend your last chapter.
-Think about how your horse wants to spend his last chapter.
-Think about how the humans will remember their last actions towards the horse they have loved for years and years.
-If care is no longer possible, Please, for the love of God, call a vet and let your senior horse go, at home, in peace.
-(To those who will argue, we did offer to take this horse if they are insistent upon auction, but we will break under the weight of everyone’s old horse, and unless YOU want to take on a senior horse, who is grieving and confused and near its end, we don’t need more pressure or judgment)
-Owners, please complete what you began. You chose to own a horse, please allow that horse to end its life at home. There is no magic solution.
We are all born, we live, we age, we pass. There is no shame in guiding your old horse over the rainbow bridge. There is honor.
Postscript: This was composed by Rosemary Farm Sanctuary Executive Director Dawn Robyn… but many have said the same thing over and over.

ACTION ALERT – Take action now to save our horses from slaughter!
Last week, the Senate version of the SAFE Act (S.2037) was introduced by Senator Menedez, D-NJ, co-sponsored by Lindsey Graham, R-SC, Sheldon Whitehouse, R-RI, Susan Collins, R-ME, Dianne Feinstein, D-CA, Marco Rubio, R-FL., Richard Blumenthal, D-CT, John Kennedy, R-LA., Cory Booker, D-NJ, and John Fetterman, D-PA and referred to the Agriculture Committee.

A Companion bill (H.R. 3475) was introduced in the House in May by Reps. Vern Buchanan, R-FL, and Jan Schakowsky, D-IL.

Both bills were introduced shortly after Animals’ Angels, in conjunction with the Center for a Humane Economy, released an in-depth investigative report about the suffering of horses caught in the slaughter pipeline.

Please make sure to thank your representative for being a champion for the horses.

The task at hand now is to make sure that the SAFE Act, which amends the 2018 Dog & Cat Meat Prohibition Act to include the word “equine”, is included in the Farm bill.

How to do that?

We need to get additional cosponsors AND convince members of the House and the Senate Agriculture Committees to support inclusion of the SAFE Act in the Farm bill.

Could not agree more - they are cesspools of abuse

We need to abolish horse auctions instead of accepting them as a necessary evil. They may be evil, and they are completely unnecessary.
