Hope Garden Club visited The Barton P-Patch today. Thank you to Kate and David for touring the group around the garden.

Did you know there are 90 P-Patch gardens in Seattle? In 2013 the Barton P-Patch was established, providing a patch of dirt that grew into so much more, growing crops and digging in the dirt for the benefit of the community.

Thankfulness. That was the subject of chapel that sixth grade students prepared four skits around to demonstrate how even in the roughest or happiest of times there is always something to be thankful for.

It's hard getting up in front of your class, let alone the entire student body. But sixth grade rocked it! By the time they graduate, Hope students are comfortable singing, acting, reading scripture, acolyting, and praying for others and themselves. At Hope we put our students front and center, encouraging them to lead their fellow classmates by example, and have fun doing it! We nurture the gifts that God sees in them that they might not even realize He put there.

What looks like kids 'only' playing with blocks, or painting pictures, or even cooking in the 'kitchen' is actually learning at its best. These activities are exactly what these young learners should be doing to learn in real-time how to share, take turns, and collaborate on how to make a pumpkin pie.

They are learning that when you mix colors you get an entirely different color! Their imaginations run wild when explaining how their Megatile tunnel will funnel animals from one area to another. They are tapping into their critical thinking skills when organizing tiles on the light board. And they have teachers right beside them cheering them on!

At Hope, middle school electives are meant to inspire, challenge, and encourage students to try something they have never done before. This year the woodshop elective was added to the over 18 electives Hope currently offers on rotation. Thanks to donations from the Eagle Excellence Fund, students are working with their hands, measuring, cutting wood with saws and feeling the satisfaction of nailing two pieces of wood together.

Beginning with projects that teach how to use the tools and the techniques, students have built geo boards, sanding blocks, porcupines, and keepsake boxes, incorporating art to personalize each project.

Today, students finished projects and were given time to freely create their own designs using the skills they learned in class. Within structure, they could think 'outside the box' creatively. There is nothing better than the humm of engaged students led by their imaginations.
