Original Message:
A group of 19 West Seattle businesses have organized a community fundraising effort to benefit victims of the Japanese earthquake and tsunami. A portion of proceeds from sales on Sunday, March 27th will be donated to Peace Winds Japan and Knk International. The two beneficiaries were selected to address three specific focus areas:
- first response to the disaster providing support to address immediate needs of food, medical attention and shelter;
- assisting individuals (with a focus on children) to cope with the lingering effects of post-disaster trauma;
- future disaster preparedness in rebuilding

Dave Montoure, co-owner of the West 5 restaurant, came up with the concept. Montoure, who lived in the Iwate Prefecture of Japan for several years felt that he had to do something to support the Japanese communities that had become his extended family. The idea began with West 5 and quickly spread to other West Seattle restaurants and bars. Energized by the opportunity to help reduce suffering in Japan, other West Seattle retail businesses jumped on board. Business include (and more are being added):

A thoughtful approach to potential reconstruction of the Tohoku disaster area.

The first thought that tumbled through architect Albert Abut's head as he sat in his car watching an intersection in Shibuya undulate last year during the Great East Japan Earthquake was "Is my family safe?" A quick call to his wife confirmed she and their 6-year-old daughter were fine.

Anyone interested in going on a group tour to Tohoku this fall? Tourism is a great way to support recovery efforts in the area. I'm working on an itinerary that closely follows this: http://www.japanican.com/special/discover_tohoku/

The Great East Japan Earthquake struck just off the coast of the Tohoku region in Japan's northeast on March 11, 2011. The area was devastated as the resulting tsunami left a trail of destruction across the landscape. Now, a year after the disaster, the people of the Tohoku region are fighting to re...

A week of remembrance. If you have the means, please consider a donation, the need in northern Japan is still tremendous. http://peacewindsamerica.org/

Relief and recovery operations continue in Tohoku, and Peace Winds is leading the way. We are on the ground in both Miyagi and Iwate Prefectures. Our current programs focus on better living conditions at temporary housing and on livelihood restoration. Click on the photo to learn more.
