Blue whales are going quiet โ€” and researchers are deeply concerned.
A new study led by Cornell Universityโ€™s K. Lisa Yang Center for Conservation Bioacoustics and published in Frontiers in Marine Science has found that blue whale song intensity has dropped by nearly 40% over the past few decades.

These long-range songs are vital for communication, mating, and navigation. Scientists believe the sharp decline is linked to starvation and ecosystem disruption โ€” as warming oceans reduce krill populations, whales expend less energy on vocalizing. This silencing could be a warning sign of widespread marine ecosystem stress.

As the ocean's largest species grows quieter, researchers warn that the change may signal a deeper environmental crisis.
