Cooks Beach is officially open! When you next visit, you will find a repaired trail and improved stairs designed to provide safer footing and ensure the path is more resilient to erosion in the years to come. Thanks to our team of restoration technicians—Ethan, Dylan, Noah, and Austin—along with super volunteer Jackson, for maintaining safe access to Cooks Beach!

Cooks Beach repairs--next week!

Necessary trail maintenance will occur at Cooks Beach beginning Tuesday, May 26th. The work will involve trail repair, including replacing a small culvert that runs under the trail. The trail to the beach will be closed for two to three days while work is completed.

With planning, skill, and a lot of hard work, our restoration team has been busy the last few days reducing fuels on the southern crest of the upper mill site at Mill Bend Preserve. 🌿

Fuel reduction is a critical wildfire resilience strategy that lowers fire risk and supports long-term ecosystem health. Shoutout to restoration technicians Ethan, Dylan, Noah, and Austin, and a warm welcome to Jackson, who joined the crew as a super volunteer! Thank you all for keeping this land healthy for wildlife, visitors, and future generations.

We can't wait for Friday! Join us for a Magical Night of Moths.

At 7:30pm, entomologist and Sea Ranch naturalist Larry French, joined by colleagues from the University of California, will share insights into the remarkable moth species that play a vital role in the coastal ecosystem. Following the indoor presentation, we'll head into the meadow at Mill Bend Preserve for a guided after‑dark experience, observing and identifying live moths as they emerge. For more info visit:

Can you spot the snake?

Ethan spotted this local resident earlier today, while the restoration technicians were working on Mill Bend Preserve. Our best guess is a Pacific gopher snake, which is fairly common to spot along the coast of Northern California. A single gopher snake can help reduce rodent populations--which can devastate native plants and open the door to invasive weeds. A healthy gopher snake population keeps these rodents in check, giving our native plants a fighting chance.

Do you think it's a gopher snake, or have another guess?

To celebrate Earth Day, I wanted to share a favorite photo of a favorite view: the ceanothus in full bloom above the Gualala River estuary, with the Pacific Ocean stretching out behind it.

Ceanothus is a native shrub and one of the most important pollinator plants on the California coast. The clusters of fragrant purple-blue flowers provide a lifeline for bees, butterflies, and native insects in the spring. Ceanothus is also a nitrogen fixer, meaning its roots pull nitrogen from the air and deposit it into the soil, naturally fertilizing the ground around it. A plant that gives back to the Earth as much as it takes. Happy Earth Day! 🌍
