NFPA’s Wildfire and Firewise USA Programs Saving lives and property from wildfire.

National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Wildfire Division Director Michele Steinberg recently attended a live burn experiment at the @ Institute for Business & Home Safety - IBHS - Research Center in South Carolina.

As part of a series of experiments measuring wind-driven building-to-building fire spread, IBHS placed an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) only 20 feet from the test building, a full-scale, two-story house, and ignited it under variable wind speeds of 35-55 mph.

The house, built to the IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home Enhanced standard, did not ignite in spite of being very close to the large flames, radiant heat, and wind-driven embers from the burning ADU.

Wildfire preparedness doesn't stop in May; it's something communities should think about all year long. 🔥🏡

In this interview, wildfire expert Michele Steinberg explains why the first 5 feet around your home can make a big difference in reducing wildfire risk. This area of your Home Ignition Zone deserves special attention -- remove combustible materials to reduce potential ignition hazards.

Wildfires can happen in any season. Taking action today can help protect your home and strengthen your community's resilience year-round.

As wildfires continue to wreak havoc across the United States, hundreds of pieces of legislation have been introduced by federal and state lawmakers, but few have led to meaningful action.

Read the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Journal to understand this lack of urgency and why intervention is so desperately needed. https://nfpa.social/4fVIkDx

Congratulations to the Westshore neighborhood on becoming a recognized Firewise USA community! 👏

We are proud to recognize the dedication of Westshore residents and the leadership of Gabriel Albarian, regional Firewise coordinator, for helping guide the community through the Firewise USA application process.

“Westshore has witnessed the impact of devastating fires over the past years and has made an effort to stay mindful of fire safety. The Firewise USA program and Gabriel were truly game changers for our community,” shared Christine Maasdam, Westshore Firewise resident leader.

Through a structured 3-year plan, targeted education, county collaboration, and potential insurance benefits, Westshore residents are building a more proactive and fire-safe community — from individual homes to surrounding landscapes.

We’re excited to see Westshore continue its Firewise journey and commitment to wildfire preparedness.

Community in action! 🔥🏠 We want to give a huge shout-out to the REMM Firewise group in Cobb, California, for another successful annual meeting.

This group perfectly illustrates what it means to be Firewise. While they stay on top of the latest in fire prevention tech and community goals, their real secret to success is neighborly connection. By welcoming new residents and discussing how to support one another, they are building a neighborhood that is both physically prepared and socially resilient.

Congratulations to REMM Firewise for proving that we are always stronger when we work together. Keep up the inspiring work, Cobb!
