Treehouse Childhood Cancer Initiative Defeating every child's cancer through shared genomic data

The UC Santa Cruz Treehouse Childhood Cancer Initiative enables sharing of pediatric cancer genomic data. But more than that, it makes it possible to analyze a child's cancer data against both childhood and adult patient cohorts across all types of cancer. This "pan-cancer" analysis of adult and pediatric tumors may identify situations where an adult drug is predicted to work on a subset of pediatric patients.

Thank you to our five incredible alumni who joined us for the Treehouse Undergraduate Bioinformatics Immersion (TUBI) alumni panel!

TUBI provides a quarter-long research experience for undergraduate students to encourage them to explore STEM fields. It was great to hear from our alumni panelists about their unique contributions to scientific and medical progress, not only through research and clinical lab work, but also through leadership, marketing, and science communication.

It was a rich conversation that left both the current TUBI participants and the panelists themselves feeling inspired by what the others were doing!

Each TUBI researcher has a story worth sharing, and we hope to hear from more at future events ❤️

Special thank you to the Degree Defining Experience Program and for funding this year’s TUBI cohort and to .ucsc , , for organizing the event!

🎉 Congratulations to Dr. Krizia Chambers on her successful defense of her Ph.D. dissertation! Krizia is an expert on osteosarcoma, a rare and complex pediatric cancer, and has contributed substantially to STEM mentorship on and off campus. We are so tremendously proud of her!

We've already raised over $2000 to introduce students to cutting-edge pediatric cancer research!
Your donation to TUBI will have a ripple effect, not only touching the lives of the undergraduates who receive training, but also the lives of pediatric patients and their families who benefit from the life-saving methods these students contribute to. Please consider giving today! https://give.ucsc.edu/schools/UniversityofCaliforniaSantaCruz/giving-day-2025/pages/treehouse

Pediatric cancer needs more people using bioinformatics to come up with new treatment options for children, but most students enter college not knowing what bioinformatics is! When you give to the Treehouse Undergraduate Bioinformatics Immersion (TUBI) program, you are introducing a student to a powerful new way they can make a difference in the lives of pediatric cancer patients, empowering both the next generation of scientists and the people they will one day help.

Join us in our mission of defeating childhood cancer - please give today!

🎗Researchers are working hard on new cancer treatments, but they need National Institutes of Health (NIH) funding! Treehouse's Krizia Chambers took to Capital Hill last week for to tell lawmakers how important federal funding is to her research on osteosarcoma, a devastating bone cancer affecting children and teens.

Krizia’s currently working to identify genetic targets that could lead to breakthrough treatments, but cuts to NIH funding could halt this type of progress, which can mean the difference between life and death for children battling cancer.

Pediatric cancer has traditionally received far less federal funding than adult cancers (about 4% of NIH's National Cancer Institute's budget). Write or call your lawmakers and tell them that we need more funding for pediatric cancer, not less!
