So, you saw a TikTok or a social media post telling you to bring your pumpkin to the woods. “Throw it out to feed the Wildlife” it said. No, Wildlife experts did NOT make those posts and it is NOT good to feed wildlife.
Someone decided that their 30 or so pumpkins would be “good” for the wildlife at the Preserve and dumped them in the park rolling them down the hill behind the greenhouse.
Please DO NOT do this at the preserve, or in the woods at any city park, or along the road or anywhere for that matter.
Here’s why:
-Bacteria, mold and the alcohols that are produced as these and any fruits or vegetables rot are detrimental to wildlife and the ecological balance.
-They are not a natural food source and are not beneficial in any way, and certainly not in the number that could potentially be dumped.
-The activity is littering in city parks, a violation of city code.
-They no doubt will bring rats in numbers that are difficult to control.
-They will take much longer than you expect to fully decompose leaving an unsightly mess for well over a year or much longer.
-Even just one event fosters the idea that this kind of dumping or “feeding” of wildlife is acceptable “in the woods”.
Please dispose of your perishable holiday decorations properly.
