Transitioning out of the military is a year-long process, and for many veterans, the journey is easier when they don’t have to navigate it alone.

Retired Major General Matt Smith shares what made this experience different: being surrounded by other veterans who understand the transition firsthand.

Meeting every other Friday and Saturday while balancing their day jobs, the group creates a space where veterans can learn, connect, and support each other through the next chapter.

Matt had already experienced the civilian world through an MBA program, but sitting in a room filled with other transitioning veterans showed him just how different the experience can be.

Sometimes, the most valuable part of the transition is knowing you’re not doing it alone.

Sometimes, the biggest part of transitioning out of the military is realizing that life doesn’t stop asking you to do the everyday things.

Retired Major General Matt Smith shares a funny but honest moment from his transition. After leading thousands of people and managing real-world operations, he found himself on terminal leave, cleaning the kitchen windows at home in Atlanta.

His reaction says it all: “Last month I was leading thousands of people... and now I’m doing this.”
It’s funny, but it also highlights something many veterans experience. Leaving the military isn’t just about finding a new career. It’s about adjusting to a completely different pace, role, and definition of responsibility.

Sometimes, transition looks like leadership. Sometimes, it looks like cleaning windows.

Retired Major General Matt Smith shares an important reality many veterans face after leaving military service: the transition into the civilian world can come with an entirely different language.

From legal terminology to financial jargon and business conversations, veterans can find themselves sitting at the table with years of leadership experience, yet struggling to understand the language being spoken around them.

The skills, discipline, and experience are there. But transitioning successfully also means learning how to translate those skills into a completely different environment.

Matt’s story is a reminder that the transition from uniform to the boardroom is not always as simple as taking off the uniform. It takes adaptability, communication, and support to navigate the next chapter.

Where do we learn how to handle our emotions?

Drew Gold shared his perspective on why emotional awareness and healthy ways of responding to difficult emotions should be introduced early in education.

His message was simple: if we want to create change in society, we have to start somewhere. Teaching young people how to understand, express, and manage their emotions can be part of building healthier communities.

Real change starts with what we teach the next generation.

Real change doesn't always come from one big move. Sometimes, it starts with just 1% every day.

At our last Tampa Speaker Series, Drew Gold, Ph.D. shared a powerful reminder about the compounding effect of small improvements. When you consistently work on yourself, your skills, and your goals, those small changes can create a completely different outcome over time.

You have to believe in yourself, take that first step, and keep improving.

At our last Tampa Speaker Series, Drew Gold shared an important perspective: the real opportunity with AI starts when we shift our mindset from fear to growth.

It’s not about knowing everything AI can do. It’s about knowing how to use it, how to prompt it, and how to make it work for you.

Change the mindset. Embrace the opportunity. Get more out of what you already do.

Beyond Emotional Intelligence: Never Have Another Bad Day!

Looking back at our Tampa event this last April, Dr. Andrew Gold, Associate Professor of Management at Saint Leo University, shared valuable insights on emotional intelligence and how we can better understand and harness the power of our emotions.

From improving performance to strengthening relationships, the conversation explored how emotional awareness can shape the way we respond, communicate, and navigate challenges in both our professional and personal lives.

The biggest takeaway? Emotional intelligence is a skill you can develop. With awareness and practice, we can learn to better manage our emotions, improve performance, and build stronger relationships.

We’ll be sharing more insightful highlights and key takeaways from this conversation. In the meantime, check out the full conversation on YouTube and revisit the lessons from Tampa.

Women entrepreneurs aren’t new. Women have been building businesses, supporting families, and holding communities together for generations.

At the ATLVets Speaker Series in Tampa, guest speaker Elizabeth Stephens spoke about another side of that journey: many women step into business without seeing someone like them who has already done it.

Sometimes you’re the first. Sometimes you’re the only one in the room.
But that doesn’t mean you don’t belong there. Sometimes it means you’re becoming the example someone else will get to follow.
