Thank you to Susan Glaser of cleveland.com for chatting with our CEO, Eric Wobser, about the momentum building here and our opportunity to build on this region’s strength as one of Ohio’s top vacation destinations.

“We want to be a destination for more than tourists,” Eric shared, describing the region as a “coastal alternative” to more expensive waterfront communities across the country.

There’s momentum behind that vision. Average monthly employment in the Sandusky metropolitan area grew 2.9% during the first half of 2026 compared with the same period in 2025 -- the third-highest rate of growth among 393 U.S. metropolitan areas.

Millions of people already know this region as a place worth visiting. As we come together with Shores & Islands Ohio, we have an opportunity to build on that strength, showing more people why this is also a place to live, work, and invest.

Kevin Smith, CEO of Leadership Ohio, recently published “What Sandusky, Ohio is Really Building,” reflecting on his observations of Sandusky and the surrounding region.

He points to investment underway across the community, the region’s distinctive assets — from Lake Erie and Cedar Point to NASA Armstrong — and the collaboration, relationships and shared commitment connecting that work.

The progress he describes is shared work, built through years of investment, partnership and leadership from people and organizations throughout the region.

Thank you to Kevin for sharing his reflections, for spending time in Sandusky and for bringing Leadership Ohio’s cohort of leaders from across the state here to experience the momentum firsthand.

Gov. Mike DeWine, Lt. Gov. Jim Tressel and JobsOhio have announced a $300 million Experiential Learning Initiative designed to help businesses build the skilled workforce they need while creating more opportunities for Ohioans to earn credentials and gain hands-on experience.

The first phase will support technician earn-and-learn programs, with participating employers eligible for up to $10,000 per employee enrolled in an approved pathway such as an associate degree, technical certificate or apprenticeship.

The investment comes as Ohio continues to build on its position as CNBC’s #1 state for business in 2026, strengthening not only our ability to attract and grow businesses, but the talent pipeline needed to support that growth.
