🚨⚾ Police vs. Police… and We’re All Swinging at Cancer ⚾🚨
What happens when cops play cops?A lot of trash talk, a lot of friendly rivalries… and hopefully a lot of softballs flying over the fence.

Join us for the Brown-Torres Memorial Softball Tournament as local law enforcement teams face off on the field while we take a bigger swing at colorectal cancer.

This tournament honors the memory of Officers Josh Brown and Ashley Torres and helps raise awareness for a cause that impacts far too many families.

Expect competitive games, bragging rights on the line, and a day full of community support. Come cheer, heckle your favorite department (respectfully 😅), and help us knock cancer out of the park.

📍 Beresford Park📅 March 21, 2026
⏰ First game starts at 9:00 AM
San Mateo Officers vs Sergeants and Command Staff at 11:40 PM
Championship at 5:00 PM

Other teams include Daly City PD, San Bruno PD, Brisbane PD and South San Francisco PD!

Bring your chairs, bring your friends, and come support a great cause. Every cheer helps us keep their memory alive and keep the fight going. 💙 To attend just make a donation of your choice below and join us at the park! All proceeds benefit the Colorectal Cancer Alliance

The San Mateo Police Officers Association is excited to announce the Inaugural Brown-Torres Memorial
Softball Tournament. This event aims to promote Colorectal Cancer awareness, emphasizing the
importance of early intervention and frequent screenings. The tournament will be held in recognition of
Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, observed annually in March.

This mission is deeply personal for the San Mateo Police Department, as we tragically lost two of our own
officers to this disease: Ashley Torres on July 24, 2021, and Josh Brown on February 12, 2023.

Ashley Torres began her career in law enforcement with the Union City Police Department as an Explorer
and Community Service Officer. In 2018, she joined the San Mateo Police Department, serving in patrol
until a diagnosis in 2020 tragically cut her service short. Though her tenure was brief, Ashley made a
profound impact on her colleagues and the citizens of San Mateo, an influence that extended beyond her
years of service. A testament to this is the "Best Arrest" award she received in 2019 for her exceptional
work on a sexual assault investigation. To honor her legacy, Ashley’s family established the Ashley C
Torres Memorial Fund. This fund is dedicated to supporting recruits of the South Bay Regional Training
Academy in San Jose, the academy she attended in 2018, with 100% of all donations benefiting their
recruits.

Josh Brown began his dedicated law enforcement career with the San Jose Police Department in 2007. In
2012, he joined the San Mateo Police Department as a lateral officer, bringing his exceptional humor, hard
work, and commitment to the San Mateo community. During his service, Josh took on various roles,
including Patrol Officer, Field Training Officer, Vehicle Theft Task Force Agent, Tactical Flight Operator,
and Detective, alongside many other ancillary assignments. His distinguished service with the San Mateo
PD concluded with his medical retirement in December 2020.

The San Mateo Police Officers Association would encourage you all to donate if you’re able. All proceeds go to the Colorectal Cancer Alliance. The webpage and QR to donate are attached below.

🦀🎰On behalf of the San Mateo Police Officers’ and Sgt’s Associations, we’re sharing with you that we will be hosting a Crab Feed & Casino Night on Friday, February 20, 2026, at the San Mateo Elks Lodge from 6-11pm.

Please get your tickets ASAP before it sells out. We brought back the Casino Night last year and it was a hit, so, based on early interest, we think it’s gonna sell out this year like the old days, so get your tickets now!

The cost is the same as last year, $85/person or $800/for a table of 10. Payment will lock down your registration (no physical ticket, but we will need the names of all guests). We take cash, check made payable to SMPOA, or Venmo, but we’ll need to know if you Venmo’d. Email Jeanine at [email protected] for tickets.

There are also opportunities to sponsor, donate, or provide a raffle prize. If you’re interested, reach out to Ed Han, [email protected].

Get your tickets ASAP before they are gone!
