Following our afternoon of ambience at the Museum, we will be activating the Sonic Runway with another slice of the electronic music spectrum. We’ll be filling the front of City Hall with some of Column’s variations on techno. with sets from .dj, woven, and + , we’ll bring an awesome representation of techno and electronic beats from around the world.

We are gearing up for a full on Sunday June 21. First, from 1-5, we are filling the glorious entrance of with ambient electronic sounds, playing off its resonances and reflections. With sets from .dj, , , and + , we’ll present a full afternoon of sound study and a soundtrack for experience the museum’s collection like never before.

We’re excited to present a set from The Bei Area on Wednesday. Warren Lain regularly infects our Wednesday gatherings with curiosity and positive vibes, this month, he’ll be presenting new work that has been encouraged by his regular visits. We love a full circle, and we love that Warren has been expanding his musical journey into electronics, while holding down his usual path of teaching guitar. His sound will be somewhat of a departure from our usual techno-adjacent fare, tickling a different nerve. With harmonic precision, melodic minimalism, and smooth percussive textures, Warren Lain never stopped scoring his personal soundtrack for his own calm. Holding space for an inward journey, with guitars and electronics, The Bei Area is a new means of integration for his musical schisms.

With deep imprints inside a brain rife with Jars of Clay and Radiohead, James Blake, Jaco Pastorius, and Jai Paul, he presents his best offerings from a diverse and diasporic Bay Area background.

Beat DJ is the software creation and business of SF programmer Nes Croft. Driven by a commandline, Beat DJ is a platform for improvising music and visuals. Live coding is possibly one of the purest ways to play computer music, as it requires the same gestures and syntactical brevity required of getting these damn things working in the first place. You could draw the analogy of the acoustic vs. electric guitar, where the “electric” version of computer music requires additional controllers metaphors of older physical processes to create its output. Live coding is closer to the bone, and results in a different form of music, despite using the same materials. We’re excited to let a group of Beat DJ artists take over the sound system and see what new directions we all discover! Performing are goopster, ox k, and ntim.

Tomorrow brings the 40th anniversary of the SJSU CADRE program. An early adopter of “computational arts”, CADRE has been part of the fabric of since its founding. Column co-founder has been spearheading much of the organization for this event. Other co-founder will be joining him on stage for the 7pm portion where they will perform on a vintage Buchla system, an instrument that was foundational to making electronic music happen in the Bay and beyond.
