The 2026 Silicon Valley Poll is out — and the results tell a complicated story.

Residents feel good about their own lives, but when they look at the region as a whole, the picture is less positive.

Sixty percent say Silicon Valley is on the wrong track. Nearly half say they are likely to leave. More than nine in ten say housing and the cost of living are serious problems.

At the same time, the Poll finds strong feelings of belonging — and a range of views on issues from regional transit to the tech sector and the rapid emergence of AI.

Bay Area gas prices have risen sharply over the past year, reducing the disposable income of residents by roughly $1.2 billion while influencing the cost of goods transported over distances — raising grocery prices as well as building and construction costs.

Within the nine-county Bay Area, prices rose to an average of $6.19 per gallon, an increase of $1.72 per gallon over last year. Within California, prices ranged from $5.77 to $7.08, with six of nine Bay Area counties paying prices above state and national averages.

The average wage in Silicon Valley hit $189,000 in 2025 – nearly 2.5x the U.S. as a whole. Since 2010, average wages have increased 45% after inflation, but median household income has increased 27%, suggesting gains are concentrated among higher earners.

Data centers are here to stay. Can communities keep them from overwhelming local resources?

For decades, data centers have powered the digital economy, enabling online services, cloud computing, and more. Today, as data centers respond to explosive demand for AI, their land, water, and energy needs are growing rapidly.

This creates significant planning challenges for local governments, who must prepare by setting clear standards and developing the right planning tools.

Meeting the moment will require a new social contract, say Palo Alto Mayor Vicki Veenker and Stanford Professor Liang Min — one that embraces innovation not only in technology, but also in policy and business models.
