SDHC is a nationally accredited land trust working since 2000 to acquire, manage, and protect land that supports sensitive habitats and species.

SDHC manages a number of open space easements throughout the San Diego region, preserving and managing the sensitive habitat and species on those easements that are unique to our Southern California environment. SDHC strives to share our knowledge and appreciation of our natural environment with the San Diego community, encouraging participation in the stewardship of our region’s precious open space.

🔦Volunteer Spotlight 🔦

Last month we partnered with the Kahoots- Gaslamp Store to clean up our Sweetwater Vista preserve! The Kahoots team, along with several SDHC volunteers, removed invasive ice plant, fennel, and castor bean (+ a truckload of trash!) from a 4,000 square foot area. A huge thanks to the Kahoots team for spending the day protecting this area and a special shoutout to Amy for coordinating 🌿

Calling all volunteers! Join SDHC this Saturday at our Ramona Grasslands preserve for some invasive removals and dethatching. This maintenance will help prepare these seasonal vernal pool ecosystems for the upcoming wet season and provide a more native habitat for visiting birds and amphibians 🐸

🚨 Volunteer opportunity alert 🚨

This Saturday, September 19th, SDHC is partnering with Preserve Calavera to clean up our Quarry Creek Preserve as part of I Love A Clean San Diego’s (ILACSD) annual Coastal Cleanup Day! Join us as we spend the day giving back to our Oceanside community and preserving this special ecosystem 🌎

Species Spotlight!

Dunn’s mariposa lily (Calochortus dunnii)🌼:
This beautiful white flower with distinctive red spots is native to southern San Diego County and parts of northern Baja California state in Mexico! This species grows very occasionally in chaparral, grasslands, and coniferous forest. Due to the overtaking of invasive species in their habitat, they are highly sensitive. The mariposa lily has a unique rooting bulb system however, that allows for its rapid regenerative growth and abundant flower production after a wildfire.

Happy Field Day Friday!

Today we’re highlighting one of our star volunteers, Adam, who organized a stinkwort (dittrichia graveolens) removal at our Rancho Coronado Preserve. With our volunteers’ help, we were able to remove a few acres of stinkwort before it went to seed preventing further spread of the invasive in the area. Huge shout out to Adam, his friends, and dad for spending the morning with us! 🌳

The Auto Wash at 3401 College Blvd, Oceanside 92056 is donating 50% of the proceeds during this timeframe to support SDHC’s conservation efforts in the watershed.
