The League of Women Voters of Salt Lake would like to express our deepest gratitude to all who attended our 33rd State of the Community Luncheon last Thursday.

Your presence and steadfast commitment to our mission made the event a resounding success, and we are profoundly honored by your continued support.

We would like to extend a special note of appreciation to our Mobilizing Citizens sponsors: Maverick and KRCL, as well as Tika Beard and Kathy Harlin, whose exceptional generosity was instrumental in making this event possible.

We are inspired by the collective impact of your contributions and look forward to the progress we will achieve together. Thanks to you, we will continue to Empower Voters and Defend Democracy!

Joseph Genda is the New American and Refugee Liaison for Salt Lake County, where he leads efforts to support immigrant and refugee communities through the Mayor’s Office for New Americans. A former refugee from Sierra Leone, Genda arrived in Salt Lake County in 2007 after spending years in refugee camps, an experience that now fuels his commitment to helping others rebuild their lives.

In his role, Genda connects New Americans to vital resources, organizes citizenship workshops and community events, and builds partnerships across government, nonprofits, and community organizations. He has played a key role in initiatives that promote belonging and opportunity, including projects that uplift immigrant stories and help cover citizenship costs for residents.

Before joining the County in 2021, he worked extensively with youth and families in South Salt Lake, strengthening ties between refugee communities and local institutions.

Genda’s leadership is rooted in lived experience and a deep belief in the potential of every newcomer. Through his work, he continues to advance a more welcoming and connected Salt Lake County where all residents can thrive.

The LWVSL honors organizations in our community who have worked to make a difference for all who live in the Salt Lake region. We are so pleased to present this year's award to the Westside Coalition.

The Westside Coalition is a community-based advocacy organization made up of residents, community councils, and local stakeholders from the Salt Lake City's Westside neighborhoods, including Fairpark, Rose Park, Glendale, Jordan Meadows, Poplar Grove, and Westpointe. Its core purpose is to unify these communities under a single, collective voice to advocate for policies and initiatives that improve health, safety, and overall quality of life. The Coalition works by identifying key local issues—such as environmental justice, public safety, housing, and infrastructure—then coordinating with government agencies, community leaders, business leaders, and residents to push for solutions, organize engagement, and represent Westside interests in public decision-making.

Join us at the Community Luncheon to celebrate the Westside Coalition. Tickets are on sale now. Visit lwvsl.org for more information.

No cap, the vibes are heavy lately, but it’s time to stop the doomscrolling and start a major movement. LWVSL is hosting a hybrid general meeting on why kids are literally the future of democracy.

Whether you’re pulling up in person or lurking on the livestream, we need your energy. This isn't just another boring lecture—it’s a whole vibe shift.

Don't be a gatekeeper—send this to the whole GC. It’s giving hope, it’s giving change, and it’s giving power.

In spite of the weird slang, the LWVSL and our esteemed panel of speakers have hope and confidence in the rising generations' ability to uphold and bolster democracy. Join us online or in person to find out why we are so hopeful. ❤️
