Brad and Liz are the proud parents of three amazing kiddos, including one who joined their family through foster care! Brad serves as a State Trooper, while Liz serves on Children’s Mercy’s Critical Care Transport Team, as a police officer, and as a volunteer firefighter.

They share a passion for serving our community, investing in youth, and making a difference wherever they can. As KVC-licensed foster parents, they frequently open their home to children needing emergency placements and respite care.

Congratulations to our 2026 Champion for Children Award Recipient, Marla Heeler!

For more than 40 years, Marla has dedicated her life to empowering children through dance, mentorship, inclusion, and service. As the owner and director of The Dance Arts Center for the past 22 years, she has helped generations of young people build confidence, discipline, creativity, and a belief in themselves.

Marla’s commitment to children extends far beyond the dance studio. She founded A Chance to Dance, an annual benefit supporting Voices of Courage that has raised more than $160,000 over two decades while teaching young dancers the importance of using their talents to help others.

Through her adaptive dance programming, Marla also ensures children with special needs have opportunities to participate, perform, and feel a sense of belonging.

Her lifelong dedication to children and her commitment to making a difference in the St. Joseph community make Marla a true Champion for Children.
