Wild cards, pizza, and a whole lot of heart! 🦁🃏

Nancy Baker, Gloria Carnicom, Kim Chapko, and DG Kenny Kinsey represented the St. Johns Lions Club at the District 11-C2 UNO Tournament on November 1. The crew brought their A-game to help raise funds for the incredible Lions Bear Lake Camp in Lapeer, Michigan—a premier, year-round camp that provides unforgettable outdoor and educational experiences for children and adults with special needs, including visual and hearing impairments. 🌲🏕️

The turnout for this inaugural event at the Masonic Temple in Grand Ledge may have been light, but the energy was massive! More than 40 players stacked cards, shouted "UNO!", and fueled up on delicious pizza, salad, and homemade desserts while enjoying some top-tier Lions fellowship. 🍕🥗🧁

🏆 Big congratulations to the top three card sharks who walked away with $100, $50, and $25 prizes!💸

🍕 And a huge shoutout to Pizza Hut for sponsoring the event and keeping everyone fed.

We might have been playing to skip turns, but we never skip a chance to support a great cause! ❤️

That’s a wrap on the 2026 Downtown Candy Crawl, and wow—what a massive success! 🎃

We had around 600 kids in adorable costumes stop by the St. Johns Lions Club table in the Rotary Pavilion on October 30 who kept us so busy that we actually wiped out our entire stock of goodie bags and had to pivot to handing out individual candies and pretzels! 🥨🍬 Our supplies were completely depleted by 5:00 p.m., but luckily, we caught almost all of the trick-or-treaters by then.

Five members of the St. Johns Lions Club attended a District 11-C2 Cabinet meeting on October 29 at “Itsa Deli Thing” in Owosso, including District Governor Kenny Kinsey who chaired the meeting, Carrie & Dean Hartenburg, and Duane & Marilyn Witter.

The District encompasses more than 30 clubs in six mid-Michigan counties. The meeting was Halloween-themed and members showed up in very creative costumes. While a lot of fun was had, some important business was conducted and a speaker from the Salvation Army shared information about the organization’s efforts to meet human needs.

In addition, $400 awards were announced by the District Hunger Committee to two food banks in Eaton and Gratiot counties from “loose change” collected at club meetings over the past 12 months.

The St. Johns Lions Club will be participating in the Halloween Candy Crawl on Friday, October 30, from 3:30 to 5:30. We will be in the Rotary Pavilion handing out candy and other treats. Be sure to stop by and say hello.

Sixteen members of the St. Johns Lions Club and one guest gathered in the community room at Briggs District Library on October 15 to work on a Halloween project. The large group stuffed over 500 bags with candy and pretzels in record time — under 40 minutes. Club members will be at The Depot in downtown St. Johns on Friday, October 30, from 3:30 to 5:30 handing out the goodie bags during the Halloween Candy Crawl. See you then!

The St. Johns Lions Club had a productive meeting on October 8 at Main Street Cafe with 22 members and one guest in attendance.

Guest speaker Nathan Workman, Director of Operations for Hope Works Mid-Michigan, shared information about the agency’s mission to meet the temporary housing needs of individuals and families with compassion, hope, and grace. What began in January 2019 with Gratiot County Hope House, a cold weather shelter that expanded into a year-round shelter in 2021, has grown into a multi-county mission of hope and restoration. Hope Works began serving Shiawassee County in January 2026 as a cold weather shelter, and planning and community partnership have begun in Clinton County to address homelessness.

Club President Dean Hartenburg presented Nathan with a package of mints made in St. Johns and a box of Dallas Cowboys apparel. The clothing, donated by a team representative, will be used for an upcoming Hope Works Mid-Michigan auction or distributed directly to shelter clients.

District Governor Kenny Kinsey presented Milestone Chevron Awards to commemorate and recognize the length of service for two members. Lion Nancy Presocki received an award for 45 years and Lion Dean Hartenburg received an award for 10 years.

The club’s board of directors recently approved a donation to St. Johns Public Schools for the McKinney-Vento program that supports students and families experiencing housing instability or homelessness. A check was presented to Lion Aleisha Wenzlick, District Office Executive Assistant, who serves as the Designated McKinney-Vento Liaison for the school district.

Tail-twister John Triantaflos always comes up with creative ways to put some fun into meetings. He challenged members to bring age-appropriate books to the meeting for K-2 students and asked them to share a story on why the book was selected. All the books will be donated to Gateway North Elementary School.

October 1 marked the start of “Vision Awareness” month. Please help us support the Lions mission to serve the visually impaired by donating your used eyeglasses, sunglasses, and reading glasses during Lions Clubs International Vision Week - October 8-18, 2026. On September 29, Lion Dean Hartenburg, president of the St. Johns Lions Club, had the privilege of presenting the club’s annual donation to Josh Lator, director of Beacon of Hope, to support the ministry’s food bank.

Sponsored by First Baptist Church of St Johns, Beacon of Hope Family Care Center offers participants one on one appointments with volunteer advisors, a Learn and Earn program that ties completion of a variety of activities with receipt of material support, a food pantry, homeless kits, used clothing, household supplies, and more.

Members of the St. Johns Lions Club had a lot of fun at Culver’s of DeWitt on Monday, September 28, participating in the “Share Night” fundraiser. Thank you to our servers: Lions Pauline Baert, Nancy Baker, Angie Beals, Jeff & LuAnn Cannell, Trina Fitzsimmons and her sister, Mona Kindel, Cheryl Hickey, Bob & Gwyn Jansen, and our onsite coordinator, Nancy Presocki. Thank you also to the other Lions Club members who showed up with their family, friends, and neighbors to support this fundraiser. There were a lot of customers throughout the evening who were generous with their tips.

A big THANK YOU to Culver’s of DeWitt for supporting our club. Money raised will help fund the $500 community service scholarships we award to two deserving St. Johns High School seniors.
