Why “Christ-centered biblical counseling”?

Because man’s ultimate source of hope in every trial and tribulation is found in God. And, God has revealed himself to us uniquely in the person of the Lord Jesus Christ.

“In the works of creation, God is above us; in his works of providence, he is outside us; in the law, he is against us; in himself, he is invisible to us. Only in Christ is he Immanuel, God manifested in our flesh. He is God in us, God with us, and God for us. Therefore, no man ever did or ever can understand anything of God truly, that is, upon a saving account, except in and by Jesus Christ (1 Tim. 6:16).” — Thomas Mallery (1605-1671)

“The pronoun ‘my’ is worth so much to the soul. Luther said much religion lies in the pronouns. All our consolation indeed consists in this pronoun. He is my God. All the joys of the believer are hung upon this one string. Break this and all is lost. I have sometimes thought how David rolls this word as a lump of sugar under his tongue: ‘I love you, O LORD, my strength. The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold’ (Psa. 18:1-2).” - George Swinnock (1627-1673)

“Do you see people with cognitive and neurological differences? Not see them and dismiss them. Not see them and recoil. I mean, see them the way Jesus sees them.”

“When he went ashore, he saw a large crowd and had **compassion** on them, because they were like sheep without a shepherd. Then he began to teach them many things.” Mark 6:34, CSB

Greek: σπλαγχνίζομαι splanchnizomai. Have pity; sympathy; compassion.

As we reflect on our first full year at the Calvary Compassion Center, our thoughts turn to this important word used to describe Jesus here in the gospel of Mark.

As is always the case, Jesus sets the agenda. And, the agenda is not to simply “feel” something admirable about the crowds, only to walk away in the end, leaving them destitute.

Instead, Jesus allowed that his sense of compassion for the crowds would lead him to take action toward them. In this case, that action was to teach them “many things,” as he could see that they were like “sheep without a shepherd” (Nm. 26:16-17).

At Baylight, our desire is to walk in that same compassion of Christ, and to share it with those who come seeking biblical soul care for the “trials of various kinds” they now face (Jm. 1:2-4).

If you’re considering counseling, we encourage you to take that most important step, and schedule with us today.

Sometimes, the biblical counseling movement can tend toward the errors that are addressed in the post shared below. At Baylight, we endeavor to not sacrifice God’s law in favor of his gospel, or confuse that same gospel message with legal commands. The Protestant Reformation heritage teaches us to hold both in distinction. God’s law shows us that we are indeed sinners, that we are in need of Christ as Savior, and teaches us how to live. The gospel provides for us all that the law demands. Finally, the fruit of our salvation by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone is never the root of our assurance, but does comfort our hearts as we learn to “walk as Jesus walked” (1 John 2:6). So, in light of the original post, what are you trusting in today—the perfect works of Christ on your behalf, or your own imperfect deeds? The difference is as wide as eternity. Only trust Him.

Events from within evangelicalism recently necessitate a sharing of this very important article from The Heidelblog. There is hope, but hope must be defined according to God’s wisdom, not man’s.

It is being argued in some evangelical quarters that same-s*x attraction (SSA) or homos*xual attraction is "natural" and that it SSA (s*xual desire for someone of the same s*x) is not per se sinful. One writer who defends this view quotes John Cheever who said that every attractive man was like "a l...
