Rotary Club of Clearwater East

Rotary Club of Clearwater East Official Club Website The Rotary Club of Clearwater East is a service organization involved in local and worldwide projects.

Visit the Rotary International website at www.rotary.org to learn about all of the Rotary service projects. Our current project is “Reading Rocks”, a combination personalized classroom and book distribution program from the Rotary Club of Clearwater East Foundation. Small classes with individualized instruction will be held for 2nd graders who need to improve their reading skills. Also, small grou

p classes will be held for Adult, ESOL and Financial Literacy, with individual assistance for those who are enrolled. Class size is limited to 6 students and will be held on a regular schedule in three Mid-Pinellas neighborhoods: High Point, Coral Heights and Ridgecrest. Students will graduate to a new class as their skills improve. The Reading Rocks bookmobile shelves are filled with books, which will be distributed in the same neighborhoods at no charge. There are a variety of non-fiction subjects, including biographies, cookbooks, parenting, science, self-help, technology, arts & crafts and history. Fiction books range from popular series to romance, science fiction, sports, young adult, contemporary life and adventure. Future plans include “Story Hour” for younger children, voiced by storytellers of all ages. Sometimes, one of the books being read will be given away to each child after the event. The library will be expanded to include popular foreign language books. Reading Rocks is built upon the belief that when you can read, your world expands beyond your imagination. The love of reading can start at any age and is the gateway to knowledge.

With the valuable help of teens from High Point neighborhood Family Center and a retired teacher, and Rotarians Tara Still, Kathy Sanford, Ann Preus, Josh Estremera, Beth Bell, and Diane Sharp, we sorted books for Reading Rocks and hauled away boxes and boxes of books. We were glad to provide pizza for the teen volunteers. Now we are nearly finished sorting for the bus and rehoming those we don't need. Next up: a clearout and a cleanout of the bus. Hope the teen are hungry!

Rotary Day at the Rays was a huge success! Club members Connie Dewese, Kathy Sanford, Diane Sharp, and Tara Still watched the game from the Baldwin Club and had a blast. Too bad it was the game that broke the Rays' 9-game winning streak.

The Official Governor's Visit with Mark Middleton; he was introduced by Assistant Governor Diane Sharp. Mark awarded Wayne Roberts and Laura Brock with Paul Harris plus pins before sharing his Rotary story. Very inspiring presentation.

We had a major clean-out of our book storage room and were so very thankful for the teens from High Point Neighborhood Family Center, all 15 of them, for lending their muscle and energy to a hot and steamy workday. Rotarians Kathy Sanford, Vera Voege, Connie DeWeese, Don and Lucile Casey, Ann Preus, Josh Estremera, Beth Bell, Diane Sharp, and Tara Still worked in the trenches, guided the workforce, donated boxes, and removed books we won't need and delivered them to The Book Rescuers in Largo.

Good job, Kathy!
