🌟Young Ambassador Chaperone Spotlight 🌟

As the Young Ambassadors make their way home today, we want to take a moment to highlight three of the most important people on this trip: our chaperones.

We are so thankful for Wendy, James, and Maria. These talented educators help plan the trip for months, navigate the group throughout Japan, and mentor and care for each student. This trip would not be possible without their dedication 👏 ❤️🎉

Monday was Nagano City day. The Young Ambassadors met with Mayor Kenji Ogiwara, tried traditional Japanese arts like the tea ceremony 🍵, and wore yukata 👘 to visit Zenkoji temple. They then had a sayonara party with host families and friends they have made over the past 6 days.

Photo Challenge #6: Nagano

::UPDATE:: The winner of this photo challenge is Cora with her image of the Japanese monkey. Nestled in the mountains of Nagano, Jigokudani Monkey Park offers a rare opportunity to observe wild Japanese macaques in their natural habitat.

Over the weekend, the Young Ambassadors have explored Nagnao with their homestay families. From shopping, to hiking, to planting rice, they have had some truly memorable adventures. For this photo challenge, the YAs were asked to submit their favorite photo of Nagano from this weekend.

Please vote for your favorite photo by leaving a Like 👍 or Love ❤️ by 6pm tonight.

🌟Young Ambassador Spotlight🌟

This year's City of Clearwater Young Ambassador Scholarship recipient is Sydney Tinling. As a student at Clearwater Fundamental Middle School, she and he family had the chance to host an exchange student from Nagano this past March. Now in Japan, Sydney gets to experience a reciprocal exchange experience as she stays with her exchange sister and the whole Takayama family.

Sydney:
"This trip was unforgettable, especially since I got to reunite with my host student, Shina, and meet her wonderful family. Staying with them gave me a firsthand look at Nagano’s culture and lifestyle. The school days were incredibly fun, the students were always so excited to see us that I felt like a celebrity! Finally, the sightseeing was amazing; I loved exploring the beautiful shrines and temples, but my absolute favorite part was seeing the chill, calm deer."

Heather, Sydney's mom:
"We had an incredible sister city exchange experience - hosting Shina and, in turn, her family hosting Sydney truly created a meaningful two way connection. As a family we explored Japanese culture, discovering both the beautiful differences and surprising similarities. We are sure this journey has sparked a lifelong friendship and are very grateful Sydney had the opportunity to learn and grow in such a meaningful ways."

Photo Challenge #5: Nara

The Young Ambassadors were asked to submit their best image from today's excursions. The always popular deer are heavily featured 🦌

Nara Park is home to more than 1,000 free-roaming deer, considered a symbol of the city and its cultural heritage. For centuries, the deer have been regarded as messengers of the gods in the local Shinto tradition, making them one of Japan’s most recognizable attractions.

On the last full day of sightseeing, the Young Ambassadors ventured off to Himeji Castle in the morning. They climbed the 5 flights of stairs as they wandered throughout the fortified structure. After appreciating the architecture and learning about the castle’s history everyone got on the bullet train and went to Nara.

The YAs received a very warm welcome from the local deer. The highlight of the day was seeing the deer bow, petting them, finding deer food and the occasional surprise antler. One ambassador said “this is my favorite part of the trip so far”. The group closed out their day at a traditional itzakayah dining on Japanese pizza, edamame, liver, and other shared foods.
