SAVE THE DATE: Festival in the Woods!

Hello, Green Space Friends! We hope you’re having a wonderful summer!

We wanted to share an update about our upcoming celebration. Our previously scheduled August 15 celebration has been canceled, but we’re excited to announce that we’re joining with St. Paul's Episcopal, Romeo to host Festival in the Woods on Saturday, September 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Come enjoy a day in the woods with food and music, nature and stewardship hikes, games, crafts, and activities for the whole family! 🌿

We’ll be sharing more details soon, but for now, mark your calendar and plan to join us!

We can’t wait to celebrate our community and this special green space with you. 💚

🌿 Progress at St. Paul's Episcopal, Romeo today!

We had a productive workday with Lake St Clair CISMA, who brought out the brush hog to clear trails and knock back invasive shrubs and plants throughout several areas of the property.

We’re looking forward to having them back a few more times this summer and fall to continue this important work.

And, of course, no workday in the woods is complete without a wildlife sighting! One of our workers spotted a male praying mantis!

A big thank you to Lake St. Clair CISMA and everyone who helped move the restoration of St. Paul’s woodland forward today!

Hello, Green Space Friends!

Come celebrate the summer solstice with us at our Native Plant Identification Workshop at St. Paul's Episcopal, Romeo green space on Saturday, June 20th at 10 a.m.

Amanda Ruffini from Lake St Clair CISMA will help us learn about the ecosystems that once existed there, identify the plants growing there now and begin a biological assessment that will form the foundation of our long-term management plan. We’ll do some learning inside the church, then head out for field work and mapping. As always, we will have coffee and snacks for everyone and look forward to seeing you!

When you visit the green space now, you see a broad expanse of mowed grass and dense woods where we (and the goats!) cleared out invasive woody plants and herbaceous weeds at our earlier workdays. But what was this land like before, before there was a church or orchards or subdivisions? And how will that inform the way we manage the land in the future?

Join Green Space Romeo for a hands-on native plant identification workshop led by Lake St Clair CISMA and hosted by St. Paul's Episcopal, Romeo.

Together, we'll explore the native plants growing in our woods and learn how supporting these species can help restore a healthy, diverse woodland ecosystem.

We'll discuss:

🌱 How can we encourage them to thrive?
🌱 What is the potential for restoring a healthy, diverse woodland?

Looking for more ways to give back to the community and support local conservation efforts? 🌳

Tomorrow, Washington Township is hosting a community tree planting event at Hox Acres — a 27+ acre property preserved to protect green space, promote environmental stewardship, and help maintain the rural character of the township for future generations.

Formerly an equestrian farm, Hox Acres was purchased by the township with a vision of creating a community-focused green space centered around conservation, education, recreation, and community engagement.

Volunteers will help plant 20 new trees to expand the future tree canopy and continue enhancing this growing community greenspace.

This family-friendly volunteer event is open to all ages. Garden gloves are encouraged, and tools will be provided.

ReLeaf Michigan will be on site assisting with the tree planting. Tree costs were sponsored by DTE Energy, and snacks and refreshments for volunteers are being provided by Spalding DeDecker.

Despite the light rain, we had a very productive workday at St. Paul's Episcopal, Romeo removing herbaceous invasive plants from the site this weekend. Volunteers focused primarily on pulling Garlic Mustard and Lesser Celandine, while also removing Dame’s Rocket and Lily of the Valley — all invasive species in Michigan. 🌿

A huge thank you to Anthony from Lake St Clair CISMA for leading plant identification and helping volunteers learn how to recognize these species in the field.

By the end of the day, we filled 8 full bags with invasive plants. We were also excited to come across some native Jack-in-the-Pulpit growing in the woods.

Our next event is a Native Plant Identification Workshop on June 20 led by Lake St Clair CISMA. All are welcome!
