🚨 ARKANSAS OFFICIALS WARN OF POWERFUL SYNTHETIC OPIOID AFTER OVERDOSE DEATH IN SOUTHWEST ARKANSAS
📍 ARKANSAS — State officials are warning residents about a dangerous synthetic opioid after it was detected in fatal overdoses, including one reported in Southwest Arkansas.
According to information reported by Axios, Arkansas Drug Director Thomas Fisher said cychlorphine was detected in two fatal overdoses during the first half of 2026. One death occurred in Southwest Arkansas and the other in Central Arkansas.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victims or disclosed the county where the Southwest Arkansas death occurred.
⚠️ Cychlorphine is a potent synthetic opioid that can cause a fatal overdose. Officials have also identified the substance in two additional drug-related criminal investigations in Arkansas.
🚨 Another substance raising concern is carfentanil, an extremely powerful synthetic opioid. Officials have linked it to four overdose deaths in Central Arkansas this year.
📉 Overdose deaths have declined statewide, but new drugs remain a serious concern.
Arkansas recorded 365 confirmed overdose deaths in 2025, down from 438 in 2023. However, officials warn that the appearance of highly potent synthetic opioids continues to pose a significant threat to communities across the state.
💊 Safety reminder: If someone may be experiencing an opioid overdose, call 911 immediately and administer naloxone (Narcan) if available. Signs can include slow or stopped breathing, unresponsiveness and pinpoint pupils. Fentanyl test strips may not detect every synthetic opioid, so a negative result does not guarantee a substance is safe.
Authorities continue to monitor emerging substances and urge residents to take the risks of unknown drugs seriously.
