Bruce Tyler is a retired U.S. Army veteran with 27 years of service as a combat arms soldier, military police officer and judge advocate general officer, spoke to our Rotary Club today.

He spent 27 months in Afghanistan, where he helped build a Rule of Law program and advised commanders on legal matters related to international armed conflict.

Tyler earned his undergraduate degree and an MBA from Campbell University, and later received his law degree from North Carolina Central University. He worked full time while completing his education, serving in the U.S. Army Reserve, bartending in Raleigh, and working as an assistant branch manager for Central Carolina Bank and later as a branch manager for RBC Centura Bank.

After completing his law degree in 2005, Tyler was commissioned as a U.S. Army judge advocate general officer and returned to active duty. He served in several roles until leaving active service in 2014. He then became senior trial defense counsel for the North Carolina National Guard and opened the Center for Military Law, representing military clients in a range of legal matters.

In 2019, Tyler and business partner Michael Hinderliter founded Weldon Mills Distillery. Despite the challenges of the COVID‑19 pandemic, the company grew quickly and has become the most awarded distillery in North Carolina.

Weldon Mills Distillery now produces more than 36 spirits, including bourbon, whiskey, vodka, gin and tequila. The company has expanded to a second location in downtown Durham and is restoring a historic mansion to operate as a bed‑and‑breakfast.

Tyler now works full time in distillery operations and practices law on a limited basis.

Also today, we honored Kim Sutton as a new Paul Harris Recipient.

Our club was honored to have Albie Brice to speak to us today.

Albie Brice is at the helm of the Battling Bishop's tennis program. Brice joined the program as a full-time assistant coach in 2016 prior to taking over as interim head coach in April of 2017. His interim tenure saw him post a combined 8-3 record with the men and women, which included securing the men's ninth straight USA South title and the women's third straight winning season.

In 2018, he helped lead North Carolina Wesleyan University's men to their tenth straight USA South crown and an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance, while on the women's side, he helped guide Wesleyan to the 2018 USA South Tournament Championship and the program's second NCAA berth.

In joining Bishop tennis in a full-time capacity, he also served as head cross country coach for the 2016 season. An avid runner himself, he brought a wealth of training knowledge to a young program looking to improve within the USA South Conference and South Region.

Brice has led his tennis teams to 17 straight men's and at least four straight women's championships. In the 2022-23 season, Brice led both teams to the NCAA Tournament, including the men who were one match away from the National Championships in Florida. Under his leadership, the women's program has grown into one of the top in DIII with Kristal Dule becoming the first female athlete in Wesleyan history to compete as an individual in the NCAA Tournament.

Brice has also overseen major facility upgrades including the state-of-the-art Indoor Sports and Education Facility. The 48,000 square foot facility houses indoor courts, coaches offices, and a viewing balcony for spectators. The addition to the tennis program also allows for the program to host NCAA Regionals and the conference tournament with ease.

As a collegiate tennis player, Brice competed for D-I UNC Wilmington and was named UNCW's Most Improved Player in 1990 before transferring to NCWU. Athletically, Brice's post-Wesleyan career has seen him compete as a professional and achieve an ATP ranking.

ο»ΏBrice also spent several years as an owner and coach with Velocity Sports Performance. During his Velocity tenure, he gained valuable knowledge in training, as well as the proper mechanics involved in endurance, strength, speed, nutrition and injury prevention.

A 1992 Wesleyan graduate with a degree in history, Brice has gone on to earn a Master of Divinity with Biblical Languages (2007) and a Master of Theology in Christian Ethics (2012) from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary.

A USTA P-1 Professional, Brice and his wife, April, have four children: Tanner, Chandler, Tyler and Brody.

A former collegiate and professional tennis player, Coach Brice brings a wealth of experience in coaching, leadership development, team building, sports performance, and mentoring student-athletes. His presentation will offer valuable insights into what it takes to build a championship culture, develop future leaders, and achieve long-term success both on and off the court.
