🌿 One Year Later: Honoring the Journey of Restoration 🌿

One year ago, Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina and left behind a path of devastation we will never forget. Homes were destroyed. Beloved landmarks were lost. Families and communities were shaken to the core.

But in the midst of the rubble, something powerful began to rise—the resilience of the human spirit.

Over the past year, we have walked together through grief, trauma, loss, and the quiet ache that disasters leave behind. We have also witnessed courage, compassion, and the first signs of new life taking root. At Warrior Heart Restoration, our mission has been to come alongside survivors—not only to help rebuild structures, but to help restore hearts.

✨ To the families still grieving—your pain is seen.
✨ To those fighting PTSD and invisible wounds—your story matters.
✨ To every volunteer, neighbor, and friend who lifted others up in their darkest hour—you are proof that hope cannot be washed away.

Rebuilding takes time. Healing takes patience. But one year later, we know this: Beauty does rise from the ashes, and together we are writing a story of restoration.

Today, we pause to remember. Tomorrow, we continue to rebuild—hearts, homes, and hope.

📣Bridge Dedication Update 📣

We want to let everyone know that the Bridge Dedication and Memorial Event scheduled for Saturday, September 27th in Maggie Valley will not take place as originally planned.

However, this is not the end of the story. The vision for this bridge is still alive, and we are working toward holding a dedication at a future date and location. The donations and efforts that have already gone into this project will continue to be invested toward that goal.

We are deeply grateful for the love, support, and prayers from this community, and we will share updates soon on the next steps. Thank you for standing with us as we carry this vision forward. đź’›

💔 Loss and Grief leaves us standing in the rubble — broken walls, shattered timelines, and silence...heavy with memories. When I entered into Disaster Response work, I had walked through that rubble myself, carrying losses that felt too heavy to name.

⏳As a disaster responder, I’ve seen rubble scattered across towns and valleys, but every time it strikes, the sting of death still pierces as if it were the first time…

🌸Last week, at a dear friends family funeral in my hometown of West Virginia, I was reminded of how precious time is — How quickly it slips away. Sitting in my Paw-Paw's house, I noticed a simple vase of flowers by the window. That small detail stirred something deep in me: Even in the face of loss, beauty and wisdom of life lingers

That’s the heart behind my first blog for Warrior Heart Restoration…

“When Hurricane Helene hit Western North Carolina, I immediately stepped into disaster response without hesitation. On Day 3, I was heavily involved with mucking out mud in people’s houses along the Swannanoa river, but the stench in the area was sometimes unbearable and I finally had to take a break in the afternoon. As I sat right in front of the river, with debris everywhere, I prayed with a broken heart: Lord, they did not choose this. They have no other choice but to rebuild.” In that quiet moment, I heard His whisper: “That is why you are here, Mary. You too know what it’s like to face devastation you did not choose—and still have no other choice but to rebuild.” From that day forward, my heart has been intertwined with those who know devastation….

There’s a new beginning stirring in Western North Carolina. Businesses are reopening. Trails are being walked again. Road closures are shrinking. Locals are returning to their favorite shops, eating at beloved restaurants, and sharing memories — of what life was like before Hurricane Helene… and what it is now. But often, new beginnings require necessary goodbyes. The Flowering Bridge in Lake Lure — one of the most cherished places in all of WNC — suffered too much damage. The decision has been made —it was torn down today. And that grief… is real. This place wasn’t just a bridge. It was heaven on earth. A sanctuary. A symbol of peace, love, beauty, and comfort. Letting it go feels like letting go of something sacred. But this is what I want you to hear —Even if a storm hasn’t hit your town, you know what it feels like to rebuild. You’ve had to let go of places, people, dreams —Not because you wanted to…But because life required it. Rebuilding doesn’t just mean starting over. It means releasing what once was —So that something new can grow. You’re not alone in this. Grief and hope often walk the same path. And sometimes, saying goodbye is the first step toward a new beginning.

✨Warrior Heart Restoration Update ✨(Not an easy update to share.)

After faithfully showing up in disaster zones and providing trauma-informed support to those walking through the unthinkable… our organization has officially run out of funding.

For now, we have to place a temporary hold on offering our trauma counseling and rebuilding services.

This decision was not made lightly—but I believe in being transparent thriigg everything.

To those who’ve supported us, prayed for us, and shared our mission—thank you.

We still believe God is not done. If anything, this pause is a setup for something greater.

💡 If you’ve ever received value from this work or believe in the mission, we’re open to partnerships, sponsors, or ideas.

This mission isn't over—it's just on pause.

If you would like to continue following updates on disaster response, I would love for you to join my personal page on Facebook as well as other social media mary_reyna_smiles.

Dear Warrior Heart Restoration Community,

First and foremost, I want to sincerely apologize for our recent silence and the lack of updates. About two months ago, my father was admitted to the ICU, and since then, my focus has been on supporting him and caring for my family during this incredibly difficult time. As you can imagine, this unexpected situation took priority over our online presence.

Although we haven’t been active on social media, Warrior Heart Restoration has continued to quietly work behind the scenes, thanks to the support of our generous private donors. We’ve been able to offer trauma and grief counseling and support services. I also have been active behind the scenes in other disaster zones.

Due to the demands of this family emergency, I have not been able to dedicate the time and energy needed to apply for grants and additional funding opportunities. That said, we remain committed to transparency and continue to update our private donors on exactly where their contributions are going.

We love you, Western North Carolina. We see you.
Thank you for your continued patience, support, and understanding. Updates are coming soon—this mission is still alive, and so is our heart for this work.

With gratitude and love,
Mary Reyna
